Celebrating Talent: Pembroke’s Molly Hord Receives Royal Albert Hall Organ Scholarship

In an exciting development for the music community, Pembroke College student Molly Hord has been named the first recipient of the Royal Albert Hall Organ Scholarship. This marks a historic milestone, not just for Hord but for Pembroke College as well, as it continues its legacy of musical excellence.

A Bright Future for a Talented Musician

Currently serving as Pembroke’s Senior Organ Scholar, Hord’s journey is just beginning. She will officially start her Royal Albert Hall scholarship after graduating in 2026. Expressing her enthusiasm, Hord remarked, “I am delighted to have been appointed Organ Scholar of the Royal Albert Hall alongside Zosia Herlihy-O’Brien, and am immensely grateful for such an incredible opportunity!”

The Royal Albert Hall’s initiative is particularly noteworthy as it aims to nurture young organ talent, with the programme guided by the Hall’s first-ever official Organist, Anna Lapwood, who happens to be the former Janeway Director of Music at Pembroke. This partnership reaffirms Pembroke’s significant role in shaping organ music, as the college currently provides two-thirds of the organists at the prestigious venue.

A Festive Spirit in Cambridgeshire

In addition to Hord’s accomplishment, Cambridgeshire has become a hub of festive activity. The much-loved revival of the 90s game show, You Bet! On Tour, recently filmed a holiday special at the historic Kimbolton Castle. Known as the last residence of Catherine of Aragon and now part of Kimbolton School, the castle offered a stunning backdrop for this joyful programme. Headmaster Will Chuter shared his pride in showcasing the castle, making it a highlight for audiences this Christmas.

AI Chatbots and Their Uncanny Personalities

Meanwhile, a recent study from the University of Cambridge has shed light on the evolving nature of AI companions. Researchers investigated 18 popular AI chatbots, revealing that larger, instruction-tuned models like GPT-4o exhibited more human-like personality traits. However, with this advancement comes a warning about the potential dangers of ‘AI psychosis,’ as human-like chatbots could blur the lines of reality. This study has significant implications, highlighting the need for regulatory measures in developing AI technologies.

Holiday Cheer at the Student Union

Back on campus, the Student Union (SU) is keeping the festive spirit alive with an array of events planned for the holiday season. Students in Cambridge can look forward to a ‘Bring & Share lunch’ on Christmas Day, fostering a sense of community and togetherness. The New Year promises more excitement with a volunteering excursion at Paradise Nature Reserve on January 9, followed by a festive trip to Ely the next day.
