Robotics – Artificial Intelligence

Exploring Robotics: Understanding the World of Intelligent Machines

Robotics is a fascinating domain in artificial intelligence that focuses on creating intelligent and efficient robots. These robots are artificial agents that act in the real world environment, manipulating objects by perceiving, picking, moving, modifying physical properties, and even destroying objects. The main objective of robotics is to free up manpower from repetitive tasks without getting bored, distracted, or exhausted.

So, what exactly are robots? They are machines designed to carry out specific tasks in the physical world. This branch of AI combines electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and computer science to design, construct, and apply robots in various fields.

There are several aspects to robotics, including mechanical construction, electrical components for power and control, and a computer program that determines how the robot functions. The main difference between a robot system and other AI programs is that robots operate in the real physical world, using analog signals as inputs, and require special hardware with sensors and effectors.

One of the key elements of robotics is robot locomotion, which refers to the mechanism that enables a robot to move in its environment. There are various types of locomotion, including legged, wheeled, a combination of legged and wheeled, and slip/skid. Each type of locomotion has its own advantages and challenges, such as power consumption, stability, and complexity.

Legged locomotion, for example, consumes more power and requires more motors for movement. It is suited for rough and smooth terrain but can be difficult to implement due to stability issues. Wheeled locomotion, on the other hand, requires fewer motors and is more power-efficient. There are different types of wheels, such as standard, castor, Swedish 45o, and ball wheels, each offering different advantages in terms of movement.

In terms of robot components, robots are built with a power supply (batteries, solar power, hydraulic, or pneumatic), actuators (convert energy into movement), electric motors (AC/DC), pneumatic air muscles, muscle wires, and sensors for real-time information on the task environment.

Overall, robotics is a dynamic field that continues to evolve with advancements in technology. From designing and constructing robots to implementing them in various industries, robotics plays a crucial role in creating intelligent and efficient machines that can perform a wide range of tasks.
