Australia’s latest youth mental health app opts for personalized care over AI and chatbots

Australia launches groundbreaking digital mental health programme for young people, without using AI

The launch of Momentum, a new online platform offering a comprehensive digital health mental health programme for young people in Australia, marks a significant step forward in addressing the growing mental health crisis affecting children and adolescents in the country. Developed by a collaboration among six universities and six other health industry organizations, this A$5 million ($3.2 million) project aims to provide free access to treatments, tools, and techniques for addressing common mental health problems to Australians aged seven to 17.

One of the unique aspects of Momentum is its decision not to rely on artificial intelligence, despite the trend in the industry to do so. Instead, the platform makes a thorough assessment of the user’s situation to determine their need for help and then builds a personalized program with sessions targeting topics relevant to their condition. Users and their families can track their progress, check how their feelings change each session, and use the program to practice real-world skills.

In an interview with Mobihealth News, Sonja March, the project lead for Momentum and a professor from the University of Southern Queensland (USQ), shared insights into the platform’s development and promotion. March highlighted the importance of partnerships with organizations such as Kids Helpline, West Moreton Health, and Education Queensland to reach young people and promote uptake of the program.

When asked about incorporating gamification and interactive means to raise the platform’s uptake, March emphasized the need to strike a balance between engagement and education. While the program includes interactive elements and simple rewards, it does not use chatbots and AI due to concerns about young people’s understanding and comfort with these technologies.

Looking ahead, March discussed the potential for digital technologies and online platforms to further assist in addressing the mental health crisis among Australian youth. Projects are underway to create new ways to identify and assess mental health using digital tools that do not require a professional to administer them. Additionally, different models of care are being explored, such as providing support through telephone calls, video conferencing, or messaging alongside online programs like Momentum.

Overall, Momentum represents a valuable resource in the effort to support young people’s mental health in Australia. By offering evidence-based treatments and tools in a personalized, user-friendly format, the platform has the potential to make a meaningful impact on the well-being of children and adolescents facing mental health challenges.
