William Ruto in heated debate with passionate Kenyan youth at X Spaces

President Ruto Faces Tough Questions from Anti-Tax Protesters on X Space

Kenya’s President William Ruto recently found himself in a tough spot as he faced furious anti-tax protesters during a debate on the social media platform X. The session, which began more than an hour late due to technical difficulties, lasted about two hours and saw more than 150,000 people tuning in to watch and participate.

The president, who has been under fire for police brutality witnessed during the recent protests and the abductions of alleged organizers, took the opportunity to apologize for the actions of law enforcement. This was a significant step for President Ruto, as it was the first time he acknowledged the wrongdoing of the security forces.

The protests, organized through X Spaces, were a response to President Ruto’s controversial finance bill, which aimed to increase taxes in order to reduce Kenya’s debt burden. The bill was ultimately withdrawn following the demonstrations, but protesters were concerned it could still become law after 21 days.

During the X Space conversation, President Ruto addressed a range of issues, including corruption, the economy, and the treatment of protesters by security forces. He pledged to sack officials implicated in corruption and promised to take action on reports of police brutality and abductions.

The president’s daughter, Charlene, even took to Twitter to promote the session, describing it as a “chance of a lifetime” for young people to engage directly with the president.

Despite facing tough questions and criticism from participants, President Ruto maintained a calm and confident demeanor throughout the debate. He expressed remorse for the situation and vowed to learn from the feedback he received during the session.

Overall, the X Space conversation provided a platform for Kenyans to hold their leader accountable and demand transparency and accountability in governance. President Ruto’s willingness to engage with the public and address their concerns is a positive step towards building trust and improving governance in Kenya.

As the country continues to grapple with economic challenges and social unrest, it is essential for leaders like President Ruto to listen to the voices of the people and work towards addressing their grievances. Only through open dialogue and genuine engagement can Kenya move towards a more stable and prosperous future.
