Two octogenarian journalists tested ChatGPT and subsequently filed a lawsuit to defend the sanctity of the written language.

Elderly Journalists Sue AI Companies Over Alleged Content Theft

The world of artificial intelligence is constantly evolving, with new innovations and applications being developed every day. However, as AI technology becomes more advanced and capable, it raises questions about the ethics and implications of using AI to generate content.

In a recent case out of Grafton, Massachusetts, two veteran journalists named Nicholas Gage and Nicholas Basbanes found themselves at odds with AI chatbot company ChatGPT. These octogenarian buddies realized that their lifetime of work may have been stolen and repurposed by the AI chatbot, prompting them to take legal action against OpenAI and Microsoft, the companies behind ChatGPT.

Gage and Basbanes, both accomplished writers and authors, devoted decades to their respective crafts, with Gage writing a bestselling memoir and Basbanes focusing on literary culture. When Basbanes discovered that AI chatbots were capable of producing human-like text but lacked attribution and accuracy, the friends decided to file a lawsuit seeking to represent a class of writers whose work had been allegedly pilfered by AI companies.

The lawsuit is now part of a larger case involving well-known authors such as John Grisham, Jodi Picoult, and George R. R. Martin, all of whom claim that AI companies like OpenAI have used their copyrighted work without permission or compensation. This issue raises important questions about intellectual property rights and the future of creative industries in the age of AI.

While AI companies like OpenAI and Microsoft have defended their practices, arguing that training AI systems on existing content is protected under fair use laws, many creators are concerned about the impact of AI on their livelihoods. Some media outlets and creators have sought private deals with technology companies to license their work, while others, like the Authors Guild, are taking a stand against what they see as unauthorized use of their content.

For Gage and Basbanes, this lawsuit is not just about protecting their own work, but about preserving the integrity of the written word and advocating for fair compensation for creators. As they navigate the legal process and fight for their rights, they hope to set a precedent that will benefit writers and creators everywhere.

In the rapidly changing landscape of AI technology and content creation, it is crucial to consider the implications of using AI to generate and replicate human work. As AI continues to advance, it is essential to uphold ethical standards and ensure that creators are fairly compensated for their contributions to the literary world. Only by addressing these issues can we safeguard the future of creative industries and uphold the value of original, human-driven content.
