IEEE Information Theory Society (ITSOC) Board of Governors Meeting at ISIT: A Closer Look at the Distinguished Lecturer Program and Political Restrictions
As an academic community, we pride ourselves on the exchange of ideas and the pursuit of knowledge without borders. We value diversity and inclusion, and we uphold the principles of academic freedom. So when an organization like IEEE denies a scholar from Iran the opportunity to be recognized as a Distinguished Lecturer based solely on their nationality, it raises serious concerns.
The Distinguished Lecturer program is an important recognition within the field of information theory. It is a prestigious honor that acknowledges the contributions and expertise of scholars in the field. By denying a nominee from Iran the opportunity to be a Distinguished Lecturer, IEEE is not only depriving that individual of a well-deserved award, but also sending a message that their nationality is a barrier to recognition and participation in the academic community.
It is understandable that IEEE, as a US-based organization, must comply with US laws and regulations. However, there must be a way to navigate these legal restrictions while upholding the principles of academic freedom and inclusivity. One possible solution could be to recognize the scholar from Iran as a Distinguished Lecturer, but make an exception for the reimbursement of expenses. This would allow the scholar to receive the honor they deserve without violating any laws.
ITSOC, as a society dedicated to information theory, should not passively accept this decision by IEEE. We must take a stand against any form of discrimination or exclusion based on nationality. We must advocate for the principles of academic freedom and ensure that all scholars, regardless of their nationality, have equal opportunities for recognition and participation in the academic community.
It is time for us to speak out against such injustices and to uphold the values of diversity, inclusivity, and academic freedom in our community. Let us stand together in solidarity with our colleagues from around the world and work towards a more equitable and inclusive academic environment.
