Thales Alenia Space Inaugurates Groundbreaking Space Smart Factory in Rome

On October 7, 2023, Thales Alenia Space officially inaugurated its new Space Smart Factory in Rome, marking a significant milestone for the Italian aerospace industry. This state-of-the-art facility is set to begin operations by the end of the year, heralding a new era in satellite manufacturing.

A Vision for the Future

The Space Smart Factory is part of the larger Space Factory 4.0 programme, initiated in collaboration with the Italian Space Agency (ASI) in April 2023. Thales Alenia Space, which is a joint venture between Thales and Leonardo, leads this pioneering project aimed at transforming Italy’s satellite production landscape into a network of interconnected, smart manufacturing facilities by 2026. This ambitious initiative also involves consortium partners Argotec, CIRA, and SITAEL, each contributing their unique expertise to the programme.

Innovative Facilities and Collaborations

Notably, Argotec opened the SpacePark microsatellite production facility in San Mauro Torinese, while SITAEL inaugurated its satellite propulsion testing and integration facility in Mola di Bari, both scheduled for completion under the Space Factory 4.0 umbrella. The newly inaugurated Thales Alenia Space facility stands as the third addition to this growing network, with the CIRA Space Qualification Laboratory expected to become operational by 2026.

Investment and Economic Impact

Constructed at a cost exceeding €100 million, the Space Smart Factory drew significant financing from Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). This strategic investment initiative, aimed at revitalizing Italy’s economy in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, allocates approximately €190 billion for crucial projects. While the Thales Alenia Space press release did not specify the exact allocation from the PNRR, an announcement from ASI clarified that 49% of the total investment in the Space Factory 4.0 programme was funded via these recovery funds.

Focus on Micro and Small Satellites

The new facility’s production capacity is particularly impressive, emphasizing the manufacture of micro and small satellites. With the capability to produce more than 100 satellites annually, the Space Smart Factory is prepared to scale its operations in response to market demands, positioning Italy as a key player in the global satellite industry.

Immediate Operations

As operations set to commence before the year’s end, the facility will initially focus on the Sicral 3 satellite, developed for the Italian Defense Ministry. Thales Alenia Space, in partnership with Telespazio—a joint venture with Leonardo—secured a €159 million contract in June 2021 for the creation of the SICRAL 3 secure communications satellite and its ground segment.

Conclusion

The inauguration of the Space Smart Factory in Rome is more than just a new manufacturing site; it is a pivotal step towards modernizing Italy’s aerospace capabilities. With state-of-the-art technology and a forward-thinking approach, Thales Alenia Space is poised to significantly impact the satellite manufacturing industry, driving innovation and enhancing Italy’s position on the global stage. As the operations unfold, the world will be watching closely to see how this venture shapes the future of aerospace in Italy and beyond.
