Star Catcher: Pioneering Space-Based Energy Technology

Founded less than two years ago in Florida, Star Catcher is on a mission to revolutionize the way we harness solar energy—specifically, in the realm of space technology. The company is developing innovative space-based energy solutions that beam concentrated solar energy on-demand to satellites and other spacecraft via optical power beaming.

The Innovative Core Concept

At the heart of Star Catcher’s technology lies a network of power nodes equipped with Fresnel lenses, designed to collect, concentrate, and distribute sunlight to satellites efficiently. This advanced setup allows the captured sunlight to be refined into specific wavelengths that are optimally tuned for existing satellite solar panels.

To add another layer of sophistication, the company employs precision tracking systems coupled with adaptive mirrors. These systems are capable of dynamically adjusting to ensure the energy beam is directed accurately, purportedly able to service up to 50 satellites at once.

Milestones Achieved

In October 2025, Star Catcher made headlines by setting the world record for optical power beaming, successfully transmitting more than 1.1 kW of electrical power to commercial off-the-shelf solar panels. This landmark achievement took place at Space Florida’s Launch and Landing Facility, showcasing the practicality and scalability of their technology.

A Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, Star Catcher is gearing up for its first in-space optical power beaming demonstration later this year. This mission is a critical step toward constructing the first energy grid in space, which is projected to deliver up to 10 times more power to satellites without requiring any retrofitting or custom receivers.

Star Catcher’s vision for the future is ambitious, aiming to dismantle the power limitations currently faced by various applications driving the space economy, including connectivity, computing, security, and sensing. As Star Catcher CEO Andrew Rush puts it, “Every major application driving the space economy is power-limited today. Star Catcher is lifting that ceiling – making it possible to build in orbit at the scale the next century of life on Earth will demand.”

Financial Backing and Market Potential

The momentum behind Star Catcher is bolstered by an impressive investment round led by B Capital, Shield Capital, and Cerberus Ventures. With the recent funding bringing total capital raised to $88 million, the firm is well-positioned to transition from validated technology to scalable infrastructure.

The potential market for Star Catcher’s technology is immense, spanning both commercial space operators and U.S. government stakeholders. To date, the company has signed seven power purchase agreements, secured multiple government contracts, and currently boasts an estimated pipeline of over $3 billion in annual recurring revenue.

Conclusion

Star Catcher is not merely a promising startup; it represents a pivotal shift in how we think about energy in space. The company’s advancements could very well set the stage for a sustainable, robust, and scalable power infrastructure that supports the growing space economy. As they prepare for upcoming demonstrations and continue to expand their capabilities, all eyes will be on Star Catcher as they aim to redefine our relationship with energy in the cosmos.
