Space Studios Manchester Presents Harlan Coben’s ‘Lazarus’

Space Studios Manchester Hosts Anticipated Thriller "Lazarus" Starring Sam Claflin and Bill Nighy

Space Studios Manchester Welcomes the Mind-Bending Thriller Lazarus

Space Studios Manchester has recently wrapped up hosting the highly anticipated new thriller Lazarus, featuring a stellar cast including Sam Claflin, Bill Nighy, and Alexandra Roach. The production took place over an impressive 33 weeks, from December 2023 to June 2024, making a significant mark in Manchester’s vibrant film scene.

A Unique Collaboration

Lazarus is not just another thriller; it’s based on an original story idea by New York Times best-selling author Harlan Coben, complemented by the sharp writing of BAFTA-winner Danny Brocklehurst. The 6-part series premiered on Prime Video on October 22, showcasing the quality and creativity produced by Amazon MGM Studios, in partnership with Manchester-based Quay Street Productions and Final Twist Productions.

The Magic of Manchester

Production for Lazarus utilized the main production offices and workshops at Space Studios, as well as building intricate sets for a variety of important locations, including a laboratory, library, and main office. The support from Screen Manchester played a crucial role, facilitating multiple filming permits and ensuring smooth logistics throughout the shoot.

Prominent Manchester locations featured in the series include:

  • Langley Building on Hilton Street in the Northern Quarter
  • George Leigh Street in Ancoats
  • The iconic exterior of BIMM on Faulkner Street
  • The vibrant atmosphere of Chinatown
  • The serene Southern Cemetery
  • The impressive Gotham Hotel and its exterior
  • Mayfield Park
  • Rochdale Canal
  • The beloved music venue, The Peer Hat

These diverse locations highlight Manchester’s versatility, proving once again its capability to be a backdrop for visually engaging storytelling.

Praise for Production

Rob Page, Managing Director at Space Studios Manchester, expressed his excitement about the project: “Once again Manchester proves just how versatile it can be when finding the perfect places to help producers bring scripts to life.” The enthusiasm for the project is palpable, as it reflects the city’s growing reputation as a significant hub for film production.

Leigh Rogers, Studio Coordinator at Space Studios Manchester, shared his thoughts on the production’s use of the studio’s resources: “It’s great to see these bigger builds coming into the studio and using not only our stages for large, double-storey sets but also our production offices and workshops. The sets for Lazarus have been some of my favorites. The attention to detail and skill used to create the haunting effects of the show is a testament to the crew in the northwest.”

Conclusion

As Lazarus prepares to leave its mark on the streaming world, its Manchester roots have set the stage for a captivating thriller. The collaboration of talented writers, a remarkable cast, and the unique atmosphere of Manchester not only highlight the city’s filmmaking potential but also promise an engaging viewing experience for audiences worldwide. With productions like Lazarus, the future looks bright for film and television in Manchester.
