Robots Enter Europe’s Greenhouses with €8 Million Investment

German Startup Eternal.ag Secures €8 Million to Innovate Autonomous Greenhouse Harvesting Technology

Revolutionizing Greenhouse Operations: Eternal.ag Secures €8 Million for Autonomous Harvesting Technology

In an exciting development for the agricultural technology sector, German robotics startup Eternal.ag has successfully secured €8 million in funding, aimed at advancing its innovative autonomous harvesting solutions specifically tailored for greenhouses. This funding round saw participation from notable investors including Simon Capital, Oyster Bay Venture Capital, EquityPitcher Ventures, and Backbone Ventures.

Addressing Labour Shortages in Agriculture

Eternal.ag is stepping in at a critical juncture as the agriculture industry grapples with escalating labor shortages. Over the past decade, the availability of labor for greenhouse operations in Europe has plummeted, with future forecasts predicting even steeper declines. The startup’s mission is clear: to develop robotic systems capable of performing essential greenhouse crop tasks without human oversight.

The Harvester: A Game-Changer for Greenhouse Operations

At the core of Eternal.ag’s offering is its first commercial system, aptly named Harvester, specifically designed for tomato crops. This state-of-the-art robot can operate for an impressive 22 hours a day, maximizing productivity and efficiency. What sets the Harvester apart is its use of artificial intelligence to ensure consistent quality in harvesting, a crucial factor in maintaining the standards expected in the agricultural sector.

“Autonomous robots only work if they can handle real-world variability between plants, layouts, and daily operations,” stated Renji John, CEO and co-founder of Eternal.ag. The company employs a simulation-first development strategy, allowing robots to be trained and tested in virtual environments before deployment. This innovative approach dramatically reduces iteration times from months to a matter of days, facilitating rapid improvements and adaptations based on real-world feedback.

Modular and Adaptable Technology

One of the standout features of Eternal.ag’s technology is its modular design. This framework not only supports additional functionalities but also accommodates various crop types, paving the way for scalability and long-term utility. With the new funding, the company aims to scale up deployments across Europe while also accelerating product development and diversifying its systems to cater to a wider range of produce.

The Vision: Fully Automated Greenhouse Operations by 2040

Founded by Renji John and Sherry Kunjachan, Eternal.ag currently employs 26 talented individuals across Europe and India, with its headquarters based in Cologne and an additional office in Bengaluru. The company has set an ambitious long-term goal of enabling fully automated greenhouse operations by 2040, a vision that could redefine farming practices and address the challenges plaguing the agricultural workforce.

The Future of Greenhouse Farming

Eternal.ag’s groundbreaking approach could potentially reshape the landscape of greenhouse farming. As the firm harnesses cutting-edge robotics and artificial intelligence, it stands poised to not only enhance productivity but also alleviate the pressures faced by the agricultural sector due to labor shortages. As further advancements unfold, the hope is that autonomous systems like those developed by Eternal.ag will support a more sustainable, efficient, and resilient agricultural future.

As we look ahead, the developments at Eternal.ag are a reminder of how technology can be harnessed to tackle some of the most pressing challenges in agriculture today, reinforcing the notion that innovation is the key to a thriving, sustainable future. This funding represents not just a financial boost, but a step towards a revolutionary transformation in the way we think about food production and the role of technology within it.
