In a bid to preserve academic integrity, some educators are taking a bold step back in time—reinstituting handwritten exams and the good old-fashioned blue book.

The Shift in Education Standards

Artificial Intelligence is fundamentally reshaping the American education system. With tools like ChatGPT capable of drafting essays and responding to complex inquiries in mere seconds, many students, particularly at the high school and university levels, are starting to lean more heavily on these technologies, often allowing algorithms to do their thinkin and writing for them. This raises considerable questions about the value of genuine learning and the actual understanding of material.

Analogue Makes a Comeback

To combat this alarming trend, a number of educators are turning to traditional methods. As reported by The Wall Street Journal, the sales of blue books—those classic lined exam booklets that many dread—saw a significant resurgence since the widespread availability of ChatGPT in late 2022. Major public universities across the nation have reported soaring bulk orders as their faculties re-embrace in-class, handwritten tests.

The Resurgence of Blue Books

According to columnist Ben Cohen in the WSJ, blue book sales increased by over 30% at Texas A&M University and nearly 50% at the University of Florida this academic year. At UC Berkeley, the Cal Student Store has seen an astonishing 80% jump in blue book sales over the past two years. These statistics starkly demonstrate the rising concern about the integrity of take-home assignments, which AI tools could easily compromise.

As Gizmodo’s Lucas Ropek points out, blue book exams are not a walk in the park—they require students to produce coherent, analytical writing under pressure, a feat that many educators believe is more challenging for AI to imitate.

A Flawed But Necessary Defence

While the return of blue books offers a tangible response to AI-driven shortcuts, they are by no means a comprehensive solution. The WSJ notes that Roaring Spring Paper Products, the family-run company that produces most blue books, has certainly benefited from this shift; however, the real challenges remain.

Philip D. Bunn, an assistant professor at Covenant College, argues that although in-class essays may serve a purpose, they cannot fully replicate the process of crafting longer, researched papers outside of a classroom. He emphasizes, "Something serious is lost if we give up entirely on the traditional essay."

More Than Detection: The Need for Reform

Despite the reintroduction of analogue methods, the academic landscape is still in jeopardy. A recent survey revealed that a staggering 89% of college students admitted to using ChatGPT for their homework. Detection software often proves inadequate at identifying AI-generated work, and many students now approach education as a game—seeking to outsmart the system rather than engage earnestly with learning.

As the arms race between technological advancement and academic integrity escalates, many educators believe that the solution necessitates a shift in policy rather than merely relying on paper. Without robust regulation and clearly defined ethical guidelines for AI use, America’s intellectual standards may continue to decline. Blue books may provide a temporary reprieve—but true systemic change is the remedy we need to secure a robust educational framework for the future.
