GPT-5: Early Reviews and User Frustration

The launch of GPT-5 has stirred up considerable excitement—and disappointment—in the AI community. Released just last Thursday, early reviews are flooding in, particularly on platforms like Reddit, where many ChatGPT enthusiasts have taken to vent their frustrations. The sentiment is overwhelmingly negative, with numerous users labeling GPT-5 a "disaster," "horrible," and "the biggest piece of garbage" they’ve encountered, even as paid subscribers.

A Quick Overview of User Feedback

A browse through the ChatGPT subreddit reveals a plethora of critical posts from users expressing their dissatisfaction. Their primary complaint? The latest model seems to lack the warmth and personality that many had come to appreciate in its predecessor, GPT-4o. As one Redditor put it, “GPT-4o had this warmth. It felt like talking to someone who really listened.” In contrast, GPT-5’s responses have been described as “sterile” and devoid of emotion.

Another user lamented, “GPT-5 lacks the essence and soul that separated ChatGPT from other AI bots.” This discontent has led to tangible reactions, with some users threatening to cancel their subscriptions due to the apparent downgrading of the user experience.

Interestingly, the rollout of GPT-5 has also eliminated the option to choose between various models, a change that has not gone unnoticed. A particularly disgruntled Redditor stated, “I woke up to find that OpenAI deleted 8 models overnight. No warning. No choice.” Many users miss the flexibility provided by the old system, leading to calls for a return of the legacy model.

OpenAI’s Response

Ironically, as users expressed frustration on Reddit, OpenAI’s Sam Altman and team were scheduled for a pre-planned AMA session. When they logged on, the criticism was palpable. During the AMA, Altman acknowledged the desire for GPT-4o, saying, “We hear you all on 4o. Thanks for the feedback. We’ll bring it back for Plus users.” He also admitted that the “autoswitcher” functionality, which determines which version of GPT-5 to use, had been underperforming, promising improvements in the model’s responsiveness soon.

OpenAI aims to streamline its AI offerings, but Altman noted, “As we mentioned, we expected some bumpiness in our rollout. But it was a little more bumpy than we hoped for!”

The Dichotomy of Expectation and Reality

The disappointment surrounding GPT-5 seems to stem in part from the high expectations set by its predecessor. Cognitive scientist Gary Marcus points out that, despite some advancements, “GPT-5 is not the huge leap forward people long expected.” With the competitive landscape evolving rapidly—thanks to advancements from Google, Anthropic, and others—users hoped GPT-5 would solidify OpenAI as the undisputed leader in AI services.

Amid all the negativity, there are users who have shared more positive experiences with GPT-5, suggesting that these criticisms may evolve over time. OpenAI has a track record of responding to user feedback and making continuous improvements. Their mission statement emphasizes a "tight feedback loop of rapid learning and careful iteration," indicating that they plan to use the current sentiment to improve their model.

Final Thoughts

While the initial reactions to GPT-5 may seem discouraging, it’s important to remember that early reviews are not always indicative of a product’s long-term success. As OpenAI continues to refine its offerings based on user feedback, there’s a possibility that GPT-5 could evolve to meet the high standards set by its predecessors. Whether it will regain the charm and personality that users cherished remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the conversation around AI continues to be as dynamic as the technology itself.

Stay tuned as we keep an eye on user feedback and updates from OpenAI regarding GPT-5 and beyond!
