Protecting Software in the Age of Github, Copilot, and ChatGPT

Discussing Software Protection in an AI World with Prof. Peter Georg Picht

I had the honor of having a conversation with Prof. Peter Georg Picht from the University of Zurich, where we discussed the impact of content-generating AI on intellectual property law and related business models. As someone who has dedicated his career to studying and teaching in the fields of business, competition, and intellectual property law, Prof. Picht provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities that arise in a world where AI plays an increasingly prominent role.

One of the key points that Prof. Picht raised during our discussion was the need for a reevaluation of the legal framework for software protection. In a landscape where software development is constantly evolving and AI technology is becoming more sophisticated, there are significant gaps in the current legal framework that need to be addressed. Prof. Picht highlighted the importance of finding ways to protect software IP rights in an AI world, while also fostering innovation and competition in the industry.

Prof. Picht’s vast experience in the field of law was evident as he shared his thoughts on potential ways forward for software protection in the age of AI. Drawing on his expertise from working with the EU Commission, the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition, and international law firms, he offered a unique perspective on the challenges facing the industry and the opportunities for growth and development.

In addition to his academic work at the University of Zurich, Prof. Picht is actively involved in advisory work for organizations such as the OECD, the EU Commission, and Swiss governmental agencies. His contributions to the field of intellectual property law and competition law have made him a respected figure in the academic community.

Overall, my conversation with Prof. Picht was enlightening and thought-provoking. His expertise and insights into the complex world of intellectual property law and AI technology shed light on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. As the field continues to evolve, it is clear that individuals like Prof. Picht will play a crucial role in shaping the future of intellectual property law and business models in an increasingly digital world.
