Military Student Internships and Robotics Research Pave the Way for Career Success Before Graduation

From Service to Success: Tristan Koopman’s Journey in Engineering and Leadership at UCF

The Inspiring Journey of Tristan Koopman: From Soldier to Scholar and Engineer

In the pursuit of excellence, the values of discipline, resilience, and leadership shine as guiding principles. For Tristan Koopman, a military student in the U.S. Army Reserves, these qualities have not only defined his service but have also shaped his educational journey as a mechanical engineering student and Burnett Honors Scholar at the University of Central Florida (UCF).

A Path Inspired by Service

Tristan’s journey began with a profound inspiration from his father, a veteran who served three tours in the Army Reserves after 9/11. This familial connection ignited a desire in Tristan to follow a similar path of service while seizing the opportunity for an affordable education. “If I could get an education while serving my country, that would be a dream job,” he reflects on his decision to enlist and embark on this dual quest.

Cultivating Skills for Success

At UCF, Tristan exemplified the essence of a devoted student and active leader. He not only pursued his academic goals but also took on leadership roles within the engineering program. During his time at the university, he gained hands-on experience through two internships at Northrop Grumman, a company that aligns perfectly with his passion for engineering and robotics.

His research efforts at UCF were equally impressive. Working under the guidance of Assistant Professor Joon Park, he played a pivotal role in developing a robotic tendon-driven hand exoskeleton for simulation purposes. “For a hand exoskeleton meant to be used in a virtual environment, complete hand dexterity needs to be kept,” Koopman explained, delving into the complexities of biomechanics, an area he passionately explored throughout his research.

Pioneering Innovations and Leadership

Tristan’s endeavors didn’t stop there; he actively participated in the Engineering Leadership and Innovation Institute (eli2) at UCF. This experience honed his skills in mentoring project leaders, managing technical resources, and fostering collaboration across various disciplines. His work with the Florida Space Institute led to the creation of a 3D-printed engineering Mars rover prototype, showcasing his innovative spirit and dedication to practical applications of engineering.

Vision for the Future

With graduation around the corner, Tristan is poised to transition into a professional career at Northrop Grumman, where he aims to expand his expertise in engineering and robotics. “I hope to eventually pursue a master’s in robotics and lead a company one day,” he asserts, outlining his aspirations to start his own robotics company focused on developing exoskeletons—a vision rooted in his research.

Throughout his journey, Tristan acknowledges the impact of community and collaboration on his development. Participation in campus clubs, such as First Step—a mentorship program for transfer students—has been instrumental in his personal and professional growth. “I really appreciate all the support and resources that have been provided to me,” he expresses, highlighting the importance of mentorship in his life.

Conclusion

Tristan Koopman’s journey is a testament to the powerful intersection of military service, education, and innovation. As he steps into the next chapter of his life with grace and ambition, he embodies the spirit of a modern-day scholar and engineer. His story is an inspiration for future students, demonstrating that with determination and the right support, it’s possible to transform challenges into opportunities for growth and success.

As he gears up to join Northrop Grumman and make his mark in the world of robotics, there’s no doubt that Tristan’s future is bright and filled with potential.
