Key Institutions Join the Arabic Generative Artificial Intelligence Project “Fanar”
The announcement of the participation of four prominent institutions in the Arabic Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) project “Fanar” marks a significant milestone in the development of language technologies and artificial intelligence in the Arabic language. This collaboration between the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) and key institutions such as the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs (Awqaf), Qatar National Library (QNL), Al Jazeera, and the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies (ACRPS) underscores the commitment to advancing AI solutions in Arabic.
The aim of the Fanar project is to build a comprehensive database of Arabic content to support various AI applications such as machine translation, voice recognition, and natural language processing. By harnessing the linguistic resources and expertise of these institutions, the project will be able to achieve its target of 300 billion words for the Arabic GenAI model, thereby improving its accuracy and efficiency in understanding the Arabic language.
The involvement of institutions such as Awqaf, QNL, Al Jazeera, and ACRPS brings diverse perspectives and resources to the project, ensuring a rich and valuable dataset for the development of Fanar. Awqaf will contribute religious and cultural content, QNL will provide digitized Arabic texts, Al Jazeera will offer visual and broadcasting content, and ACRPS will contribute academic research papers and books.
The collaboration between these institutions and MCIT demonstrates a shared vision to preserve and promote the Arabic language and culture on a global scale. HE Minister of Communications and Information Technology Mohammed bin Ali Al Mannai expressed his optimism about the positive impact of this cooperation on the development of Arabic AI models, emphasizing the importance of preserving the authenticity of the Arabic language.
As the founder of Fanar project, the Qatar Computing Research Institute plays a crucial role in providing innovative solutions in artificial intelligence and driving scientific and research development in Qatar and the region. Dr. Ahmed K. Elmagarmid, Acting Vice President for Research at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, highlighted the significance of high-quality data resources in creating and improving language technologies, underscoring the institute’s commitment to advancing Arabic language processing.
Overall, the participation of these prominent institutions in the Fanar project is a testament to the collaborative efforts towards advancing AI solutions in the Arabic language. This partnership sets a strong foundation for the development of linguistic models that will not only enhance AI technologies but also promote the richness and diversity of the Arabic language on a global scale.
