Masakhane: Empowering African Languages with a New Digital Platform

Empowering African Languages: LINGUA Africa Initiative Launched to Enhance Inclusive AI Collaboration

LINGUA Africa: Empowering African Languages in the AI Era

In the fast-evolving world of natural language processing (NLP), Africa is making its mark, thanks primarily to innovative initiatives like Masakhane. This organization is at the forefront of driving NLP research on the continent, advocating for the inclusion and recognition of African languages within the global AI landscape.

Unveiling LINGUA Africa

Recently, Masakhane announced a powerful collaboration with Microsoft AI for Good Lab, the Gates Foundation, and Google.org to launch LINGUA Africa. This initiative is designed to bolster the foundational linguistic resources critical for developing inclusive AI within Africa. With its open call for projects, LINGUA Africa aims to elevate homegrown solutions that engage with African languages.

LINGUA Africa draws inspiration from the successful LINGUA Europe project, which fostered open datasets and resources for underrepresented European languages. The goal is clear: create an environment where African languages are acknowledged not merely as an afterthought but as integral components of a more inclusive digital future.

A Call to Action

The application window for LINGUA Africa opened recently and will close on June 15, 2026. The initiative invites submissions from a wide array of stakeholders including nonprofits, academic institutions, social enterprises, and cultural organizations—all of whom share a commitment to public interest work.

Selected projects will benefit from significant advantages such as funding, Azure compute credits, Google Cloud Platform (GCP) credits, and in-kind technical support from Microsoft’s AI for Good Lab. Participants will also receive structured guidance from academic fellows and collaboration opportunities within the broader LINGUA Africa ecosystem.

Areas of Focus and Funding Opportunities

LINGUA Africa’s funding will focus on three key areas:

1. Data Creation

Projects that involve the building, curation, documentation, translation, validation, or licensing of datasets and language resources can receive up to $50,000 in cash and $50,000 in compute credits.

2. Model or Tool Development

For those working on creating or adapting models, benchmarks, tooling, or technical infrastructures for African languages, there’s an opportunity of up to $100,000 in cash and $100,000 in compute credits.

3. Sectoral Applications

Projects that plan to deploy or pilot language technologies in real-world settings—demonstrating a clear pathway to measurable social or economic impact—can apply for funding up to $250,000 in cash and $400,000 in compute credits.

Eligibility Criteria

To participate, organizations must meet several eligibility requirements:

  • Be a nonprofit, social enterprise, research institution, or associated group.
  • Have a focus on African languages.
  • Be based in or have a significant presence in Africa.
  • Be legally registered.

The Future of AI in Africa

As Chenai Chair, director of the Masakhane African Languages Hub, aptly stated, “The future of AI must be shaped by the people it serves.” The LINGUA Africa initiative offers critical resources to enable African-led AI solutions, ensuring that technology meets the everyday needs of communities.

For those interested in applying, more information about LINGUA Africa, including application guidelines, can be found here.

In these developments, we see not only an opportunity for technological advancement but also a chance to reshape the narrative around Africa in the digital age. By supporting African languages in NLP, we’re fostering an inclusive environment that celebrates linguistic diversity—a vital element in creating equitable AI solutions.
