The panel discussion, moderated by Cláudia Pinto from the Portuguese Footwear Association, featured notable industry representatives: Albano Fernandes (AMF), Ricardo Costa (Rodiro), Vítor Almeida (Tropimática), and Ventura Correia (Carité). They shared valuable insights into the intricate challenges and opportunities that come with implementing automation and robotics in footwear manufacturing.

Vítor Almeida highlighted a significant hurdle: the complexity of adapting robotics for a dynamic product like footwear. Unlike automotive manufacturing, where standardized parts dominate, footwear must adjust to natural materials and shifting fashion trends, with at least two collections released annually. This variability makes it essential for robotics to be highly adaptable, presenting a unique challenge for manufacturers. He noted, “Putting robots to work making cars is child’s play compared to robots making shoes.”

Adapting to New Workforce Demands

Almeida’s message was clear: companies that fail to invest in technology may find themselves unable to compete in the European market. The younger workforce is increasingly reluctant to engage in repetitive, menial tasks traditionally associated with shoemaking. “A young person who leaves school with more qualifications… is not willing to spend eight hours a day on the factory floor brushing glue onto uppers,” he remarked.

In light of this, Ventura Correia emphasized the necessity of automation: “The incorporation of automation in companies is necessary to ensure consistent productivity with less human effort.” By implementing robots, companies can shift human resources towards more strategic and specialized roles, enhancing both productivity and job satisfaction.

The Human Element in Automation

However, embracing automation does not diminish the importance of human expertise. Ricardo Costa from Rodiro pointed out that even with robotics, continued investment in human resources is crucial. Employees must be trained to adapt to new technologies and processes. “Robots lead to greater efficiency and productivity,” he explained, “but we also need to ensure our staff are prepared for these changes.”

Albano Fernandes echoed this sentiment, stressing that while automation can enhance processes, it’s vital to blend technology with traditional craftsmanship. “We will be successful in Portugal when we manage to reconcile robotization with know-how,” he stated, highlighting the pride in traditional shoemaking while acknowledging the need for evolution.

A New Paradigm for Footwear Production

Looking ahead, Ventura Correia called for the establishment of new professions centered on programming and system design, emphasizing quality over quantity. He cautioned against misconceptions that automation automatically leads to improved quality and efficiency, stating, “Anyone who thinks investing in a robot will initially result in better quality… is mistaken.”

Vítor Almeida underscored the complexities involved in transitioning to automated processes, arguing that the cost of implementation and the effective management of this transition is often more critical than the cost of the robots themselves.
