Creating space for LGBTQ+ creativity and community in the North

“Creating a Queer Community Hub: Gut Level’s Journey in Sheffield”

Bez and Frazer, the co-founders of Gut Level, are creating a space in Sheffield that is more than just a bar – it’s a community hub for the queer scene. Named after a Cabaret Voltaire song, Gut Level was born out of a necessity for a party space in Sheffield that was economically accessible and focused on electronic music with good politics. The lack of overtly queer spaces in the city led these founders to create their own, and they have now established a venue that prides itself on sound politics, economic inclusivity, and queer hedonism.

After five years of establishing themselves in various locations throughout Sheffield, Gut Level recently opened their biggest project yet – a new venue on Chapel Walk. The space, supported by a tiered membership system to keep drinks and tickets affordable, aims to provide a safe and inclusive environment for all party-goers and the sober-curious. With a strong emphasis on community and DIY ethos, Gut Level is a refreshing addition to Sheffield’s nightlife scene.

However, the road to establishing Gut Level’s new venue has not been without its challenges. The co-founders faced financial obstacles and had to rely on community funding, donations, and public support to make their dream a reality. The venue’s mission to be non-profit and community-centered has driven their decisions, and they are committed to maintaining affordability and accessibility for all patrons.

Despite the challenges of running a DIY venue in a changing economic landscape, Gut Level’s founders remain dedicated to their vision. They have plans to continue programming a variety of events, from DJ workshops to film screenings, and hope to see the space become a permanent fixture in Sheffield’s cultural landscape. By building a supportive community and utilizing innovative funding models, Gut Level is paving the way for more grassroots venues in the North and beyond.

As Gut Level continues to grow and evolve, it’s clear that this space is more than just a venue – it’s a testament to the power of community, creativity, and resilience. With a commitment to inclusivity, accessibility, and good vibes, Gut Level is a shining example of what can be achieved when passionate individuals come together to create something truly unique.
