China Sets New Standards for Humanoid Robots and Embodied AI

In a groundbreaking development for the robotics sector, China has officially introduced its first national standard system dedicated to humanoid robots and embodied artificial intelligence (AI). Announced on February 28, 2025, in Beijing, this framework is a significant step toward regulating a rapidly evolving industry and ensuring that the production and deployment of humanoid robots adhere to stringent safety, ethical, and technical guidelines.

A Comprehensive Framework

The newly established standards encompass the entire industrial chain and lifecycle of humanoid robotics, ensuring a structured approach to development and production. The framework is divided into six key components:

  1. Basic Commonality: Laying the foundation for standardization across various models and manufacturers.

  2. Brain-like and Intelligent Computing: Defining specifications for the core processing functions of embodied AI systems and outlining the data management requirements necessary across training and deployment cycles.

  3. Limbs and Components: Establishing standards for the physical attributes and functionalities of humanoid robot designs.

  4. Complete Machines and Systems: Addressing integration and performance expectations for fully functional robots.

This initiative was the result of collaboration amongst over 120 research institutes, companies, and industry users under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s technical committee for humanoid robots and embodied intelligence.

The introduction of these standards comes on the heels of significant growth in China’s humanoid robotics industry. In 2025 alone, more than 140 domestic manufacturers were reported to have launched over 330 humanoid robot models.
