Arcgency and MAST Design Floating Public Space in Copenhagen

Floating Community Bliss: Bedding 1 Moored in Copenhagen’s Arsenalgraven Canal

A New Era for Urban Waterfronts: Arcgency and MAST Unveil Innovative Guesthouse and Community Space

Exploring Bedding 1: Copenhagen’s Innovative Floating Community Space

In the heart of Copenhagen, the architectural prowess of Danish studios Arcgency and MAST has come to life with the recent completion of Bedding 1. This floating community space and guesthouse, anchored alongside the artificial island of Christiansholm, marks an exciting evolution in urban waterfront design.

A Unique Location

Nestled in the Arsenalgraven canal, Bedding 1 is the first of three envisioned floating structures, complementing a larger development locally known as Papirøen or Paper Island. This venture isn’t just about aesthetics; it aims to transform the waterfront into a vibrant, communal space that connects residents, visitors, and nature.

Bridging History and Modernity

In a nod to Copenhagen’s rich shipbuilding heritage, Arcgency and MAST have crafted a timber-framed structure that evokes the historical slipways once used for launching ships from the Royal Danish Naval Shipyard. The design celebrates this legacy, as the structure itself was built by Krohns Bådbyggeri, the last active shipyard in the city center—a striking reminder of the locale’s maritime past.

Mads Møller, founder of Arcgency, emphasizes this connection: “Bedding 1 was conceived as something that belongs to the water, physically and conceptually.” This design philosophy redefines urban waterfronts, breathing life into what was once simply a backdrop for city life.

A Modern Public Space

Bedding 1’s purpose transcends that of a mere guesthouse; it is a dynamic public space where the community can convene. Its layout includes a flexible upper deck at quay level, designed to host various events and gatherings. The metal staircase leading down to the lower level reveals two guest apartments, which provide invaluable accommodation for visitors. These spaces seamlessly open onto a sheltered timber terrace, ideal for mooring boats and launching kayaks.

The clever design incorporates generous outdoor areas, allowing guests and residents to foster a connection with the water—a vital aspect of life in a coastal city.

Innovation Through Design

The structure’s roof is another architectural highlight. Made of anodised zinc, it features a sharp edge designed to manage rainwater runoff efficiently, channeling it directly into the canal. Angular timber supports frame the long sides, while the building is enveloped in Douglas fir planks that age gracefully, reinforcing its maritime ties.

Inside, light floods the space, enhanced by a palette of white walls and pale timber. Large windows provide breathtaking views of the canal and enhance the sense of open air, inviting the surrounding environment into the heart of the design.

The Future of Urban Waterfronts

Bedding 1 is a significant step forward in urban planning and architectural design. It stands as a beacon for future developments on the waterfront, illustrating how thoughtful design can harmoniously integrate community spaces with natural surroundings.

The comprehensive vision for Paper Island, developed by Cobe, includes not only Bedding 1 but also a floating garden and piers, promising to further enrich this vibrant locale. MAST’s recent work on a floating residential neighborhood in Rotterdam further illustrates the growing trend of innovative aquatic living spaces.

As the community moves forward, Bedding 1 serves as a model for how architecture can align with history, culture, and the natural aquatic environment, transforming the way we experience urban life on the water.

Whether you’re a local or a tourist, the unique charm of Bedding 1 is sure to leave a lasting impression, making Copenhagen’s waterfront a dynamic and inviting space for all. Welcome to the future of communal living!
