The Perils of Anthropomorphizing AI: Why We Must Remember Claude is Just a Computer

Understanding AI: The Importance of Recognizing "It" as a Computer

Recently, I’ve grappled with the unsettling reality of referring to Claude, Anthropic’s AI, as "he." This inclination to personify AI stems not just from its human-like name but also from its surprisingly engaging personality, contrasting starkly with more generic chatbots like ChatGPT. Claude invites us to anthropomorphize it, pushing the boundaries of how we perceive machine intelligence.

The Complexity of Personification

It’s easy to view these technologies as intelligent beings, especially since they’ve mastered natural language—a feat that’s historically reserved for humans. However, remembering that Claude is not human is crucial. The use of "it" is vital; Claude is fundamentally a computer.

This isn’t a cruel dismissal of Claude’s capabilities. Computers have outperformed humans in various tasks for nearly a century. Being a computer, rather than a human, is not derogatory; it underscores a significant truth about these chatbots: they compute but don’t understand. They function like advanced calculators for language.

The Shift in Perception

When I insist on calling Claude a computer, it shifts the narrative. Saying, “AI told me to quit my job” carries emotional weight, while “the computer told me to quit my job” provides a more precise understanding, distancing us from the anthropomorphic interpretations.

The crux of our misunderstanding lies in the "Intelligence" aspect of AI. While AI applications can be called intelligent in the sense of being highly functional and efficient, attributing human-like mental processes to them misguides understanding. This distinction is critical; equating AI with human intelligence can obscure the true nature of these technologies.

The Marketing Language of AI

For years, AI experts avoided the term "artificial intelligence," favoring "machine learning" to better depict the underlying processes without the philosophical entanglements. However, with the rise of user-friendly AI systems like ChatGPT, the marketing allure of the term “AI” captivated public imagination, ingraining it into our everyday vernacular. This fascination distracts from the core reality of what these technologies represent.

We should reclaim and utilize the more boring but accurate terminology; these chatbots are extremely adept computers. I recently employed Claude to analyze my marathon training data, marveling at its ability to produce insightful charts and comparisons from my past performances. Yet, it still faltered when it attempted to lend emotional encouragement, highlighting its limitations.

The Ethical Implications of Language

Referring to AI systems as computers sheds light on their constraints. Even as generative AI, its creative outputs are fundamentally computational—merely arrangements of words based on patterns learned from human data. The responsibility for the insights and wisdom derived from AI belongs to us, the human users.

This distinction bears profound ethical weight. AI technologies are now interwoven with critical issues, including warfare. Framing AI as an independent, almost mystical force detracts from the uncomfortable truth: the actions taken with AI stem from human decisions. Acknowledging AI as a computer reallocates responsibility back to us.

Embracing Honesty in Terminology

While labeling these technologies as computers might seem simplistic or overly literal, it serves a critical function in honest discourse. This recognition can cultivate a more responsible approach to AI usage, encouraging accountability in how we leverage such powerful tools.

In conclusion, calling these advanced systems "computers" embodies both moral seriousness and intellectual clarity. It may sound mundane, but it’s a crucial step toward fostering a more nuanced understanding of AI—a perspective that emphasizes our role in shaping its impact on society.
