A Colorful Mix: Poppy Jo Lee’s Space Invaders Room

Inside the Colorful World of Poppy: A Snapshot of Life at St Catz

As the Lent term draws to a close and exhaustion settles in, finding comfort and solace in the spaces we inhabit becomes increasingly important. In a recent visit to a friend’s room, I was struck by the vibrant and eclectic nature of her decor, which seemed to mirror the multifaceted nature of her own identity.

Poppy, a second-year student at Cambridge University, has created a space that is a true reflection of herself – a happy hodgepodge, as she calls it. Her room is adorned with patchwork blankets, handcrafted decorations, and an explosion of color. As a self-proclaimed maximalist, she fills every inch of her space with meaningful trinkets and treasures.

What struck me most about Poppy’s room was how each item seemed to hold a story. From handmade gifts from friends to mementos from past travels, her room is a veritable treasure trove of memories. Even mundane objects like a clock or a pair of earrings hold significance, reminding her of moments and people that have shaped her journey thus far.

In a university environment where common spaces are limited, our personal spaces become even more important. They serve as sanctuaries from the hustle and bustle of academic life, offering a place of respite and reflection. Poppy’s room, with its warmth and vibrancy, is a testament to the power of creating a space that truly feels like home.

As we navigate the challenges of university life – from endless lectures to late-night study sessions – it is essential to have spaces that bring us comfort and joy. Whether it’s a cozy blanket from a charity shop or a handmade ornament from a friend, these little touches can make a world of difference in our overall well-being.

As we look ahead to the next term with a mix of excitement and trepidation, let’s remember to seek out the vibrancy and color in our lives. Just like Poppy’s room, may our spaces be filled with reminders of the moments and people that bring us joy, even in the midst of chaos and exhaustion. And may we find solace in the simple comforts of home, whether it’s a patchwork quilt or a treasured memento that holds a special place in our hearts.
