UHI and Space Scotland Unveil Discovery Kits to Inspire the Next Generation of Space Professionals and Enhance STEM Education

UHI and Space Scotland Launch Space Forces Discovery Kits to Inspire Future Space Workforce

The University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) and Space Scotland have unveiled a new initiative aimed at engaging the next generation in space science through hands-on learning.

Inspiring the Next Generation: UHI and Space Scotland Launch Space Forces Discovery Kits

In an exciting initiative to ignite curiosity in the science of space, the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) and Space Scotland have launched the Space Forces Discovery Kit. This innovative kit aims to inspire the next generation of the space workforce, making STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education engaging and accessible for young learners.

Hands-On Learning in the Classroom

The Space Forces Discovery Kits provide a unique, hands-on approach for students to explore the forces that shape our universe. UHI’s STEM Outreach Coordinators will directly deliver interactive sessions in classrooms across the Highlands and Islands, Moray, Perthshire, and north-east Aberdeenshire. These engaging activities encourage students to dive into practical experiments and creative projects while building their confidence in STEM subjects.

Tailored Learning Experiences

Aligned with Scotland’s Curriculum for Excellence, the kits are thoughtfully designed for different age groups:

  • First Level Learners will:

    • Create and launch their own stomp rockets.
    • Design parachutes that safely return a capsule to Earth.
    • Explore various forces using a large play parachute.
    • Discover space-related skills and careers through a selection of engaging, space-themed books.
  • Early Level Learners will:

    • Observe the rotation of the Earth, moon, and sun.
    • Dress characters to reflect seasonal changes.
    • Create impact craters on the moon.
    • Discover and design constellations.
    • Enjoy storytelling combined with hands-on activities.

This structured approach not only fuels imagination but also aligns with educational standards, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience.

Breaking Down Barriers

Dr. Athina Frantzana, Chair of New Voices in Space at Space Scotland, emphasizes the importance of outreach in cultivating a diverse future workforce: “Too often, space is seen as a career for a select few; but in reality, it’s a sector powered by a wide range of skills and perspectives. Early outreach matters because it broadens children’s understanding of what’s possible and builds their confidence.”

Dawne Bloodworth, Head of STEM Development at UHI, adds, “Working with Space Scotland, we are delighted to launch the Space Forces Discovery Kit. Over the past two and a half years, we have engaged with more than 40,000 children across our region, and we aim to continue breaking down barriers to STEM education.”

Building a Brighter Future

The launch of the Space Forces Discovery Kit marks a significant step in UHI’s ongoing commitment to widening access to STEM education. It not only supports young learners in developing essential skills but also encourages them to envision a future in the dynamic field of space.

As this initiative unfolds, it will undoubtedly inspire countless young minds, challenging stereotypes and sparking curiosity. These Discovery Kits are poised to change the narrative around careers in space, ensuring that every child believes that a future in this exciting sector is not only attainable but also within their grasp.
