New Makerspace Opens in Town Center – Destination Chesterfield

New Makers’ Space Opens in Chesterfield, Fostering Creativity and Collaboration

Unleashing Creativity: A New Makers Space in Chesterfield

By Alex Baddley – 17 March 2026

Chesterfield has taken a significant leap forward in promoting creativity and collaboration with the opening of a remarkable new makers space in the heart of town. This vibrant hub, spearheaded by Junction Arts, one of the UK’s longest-established community arts charities, promises to be a game-changer for local artists, makers, and innovators.

Reimagining a Disused Building

Located on Station Road, the newly transformed space was once a disused building now buzzing with potential. Junction Arts has expertly renovated the facility into a dynamic community hub that offers a variety of studios, workshops, and collaborative work areas, creating an inviting environment for anyone looking to unleash their creative spirit.

Supporting Local Talent

One of the exciting aspects of this new initiative is its commitment to local talent. Sections of the building are being sublet to emerging artists and creative businesses. This not only fosters a supportive environment where artists can thrive but also contributes to an enriching cultural tapestry within Chesterfield. Local artists are now empowered to create, collaborate, and draw inspiration from one another in an environment built for creativity.

Community and Commitment

Chesterfield Borough Council has expressed considerable enthusiasm about the revitalization of this space. Councillor Tricia Gilby, the Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, noted, “We’re delighted to see this disused building brought back into use in such a positive and creative way.” This sentiment underscores the council’s commitment to expanding the area’s growing creative sector and supporting initiatives that resonate with the community’s needs.

A Historical Milestone

Junction Arts Managing Director Emily Bowman shared her excitement about the new space, especially as the organization celebrates its 50th anniversary. “The new space has given us an amazing opportunity to bring together the town’s vibrant creative community,” she stated. The mission is not just to provide a workspace but to instill a sense of community through collaboration, co-creation, and shared growth.

Looking ahead, Bowman mentioned plans to develop the space further as a hub for creativity, offering workshops and meeting facilities that cater to the arts community and beyond. This proactive approach will inspire the next generation of artists while nurturing existing talent.

A Thriving Collective of Creators

The makers space is already home to a colorful array of artists and creative businesses, including:

  • Annie Littlewood (Writer)
  • Sombrero Printmaking
  • Chris Sheldon (Guitar Technician and Luthier)
  • 13 Bends Design
  • Lucie Maycock (Community Artist)
  • Anna Piper (Weaver)
  • Growth Activities
  • Defeye Creative
  • S40 and S41 Magazine
  • Neil Piper (Musician)
  • Kakou Technologies

This diverse collection of creative minds is indicative of the vibrant culture that Junction Arts aims to cultivate within the new hub.
