Entrepreneurs and innovators from the North East of England have embarked on an exciting journey to the United States, aiming to attract investment into the region’s flourishing space sector. The Space North East England delegation recently landed in Orlando for the much-anticipated Florida Commercial Space Week, a premier event that unites industry leaders, government officials, and military stakeholders for four days of strategic collaboration and networking aimed at advancing the global commercial space economy.

Building International Partnerships

The regional delegation was comprised of representatives from notable UK space companies and local universities, including Durham, Newcastle, and Northumbria. This cohesive team was keen to forge international partnerships, showcase their capabilities, and explore new opportunities during a jam-packed agenda filled with conferences, meetings, and site visits.

Lisa Mullen, interim cluster manager of Space North East England, spearheaded the trip and emphasized its significance: “Our mission brought North East England’s leading innovators into the heart of Florida’s booming space ecosystem during Commercial Space Week. It helped us forge new collaborations and opened market opportunities, reinforcing transatlantic links across the commercial space sector.”

Engaging with Key Stakeholders

Throughout their five-day visit, which concluded last weekend, the delegation had the opportunity to visit the University of Central Florida. Here, the agenda zeroed in on the intersection of industry, academia, and the broader space ecosystem. The team also toured Florida’s Space Coast, engaging with some of the world’s most influential space organizations.

During the event, they attended Commercial Space Week and SpaceCom 2026 in Orlando, taking the opportunity to pitch their products and services to potential investors and partners. The delegation included members from North East companies like MSP and NEL Technologies, who were eager to showcase their innovations in this vibrant setting.

Positive Outcomes for the Region

Mullen expressed optimism about the outcomes of the visit, stating, “It was a fantastic experience for the delegation. We hope we’ve done the North East proud, and that the relationships we’ve built and the contacts we’ve made will benefit the region’s space sector, which has continued to go from strength to strength in recent years.”

Highlighting the importance of face-to-face interactions, she noted, “There’s no substitute for being in the room where things are happening. It was great for us to be there representing the region and showcasing the skills and expertise we can contribute to investors in this field.”

Looking Forward

This visit was organized by the UK Government’s Department for Business and Trade and was hosted by the British Consulate General in Miami. Encouragingly, a delegation from Space Florida is expected to visit the North East next month, poised to further reinforce these vital international ties.

As we look ahead, the North East’s ambitious space sector continues to thrive, with this delegation marking yet another step toward enhancing its global presence. With strategic collaborations and partnerships on the horizon, the future looks bright for the region’s contributions to the world of space exploration and technology.
