Are you aspiring to kickstart your career in the awe-inspiring realm of space? Your dream might be closer than you think! The European Space Agency (ESA) is ready to unveil its 2026 Graduate Trainee (EGT) opportunities. Now’s the time to refine your CV, polish that motivation letter, and prepare to aim for the stars!

What is the EGT Programme?

If you’re nearing the completion of your Master’s degree or have recently graduated in engineering, science, IT, or business services, the EGT Programme promises a year (possibly two!) of riveting experiences alongside Europe’s brightest minds in the space sector. This unique program places you directly into the heart of ESA’s thriving space activities—an exceptional opportunity to help shape the future of space exploration.

1. Who Can Apply?

To be eligible for the EGT Programme, you need to meet the following criteria:

  • Currently in your final year of a Master’s program or a recent graduate in relevant fields (engineering, science, IT, or business services), with a maximum of one year of professional experience post-graduation.

  • A citizen from one of the ESA Member States, which include Austria, Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, and others listed on the ESA website, as well as some associate and cooperating states.

2. What the EGT Programme Offers

The EGT Programme isn’t just an internship; it’s a gateway to professional growth:

  • Professional Experience: Collaborate with a diverse team of scientists, engineers, and business professionals on groundbreaking space missions within an international setting.

  • Career Opportunities: Gain extensive experience that can lead to long-term career prospects in Europe’s burgeoning space sector.

  • Benefits: Enjoy a one-year contract (with the possibility for extension), 2.5 days of paid leave per month, and a salary exempt from national income tax in ESA Member States, along with other financial benefits.

3. The EGT Experience

What does it mean to be an EGT at ESA? Testimonials from former trainees illustrate the dynamic work environment.

One exciting initiative is YPSat—the Young Professionals Satellite project. Trainees participate in designing, building, and operating small satellites, getting hands-on experience at every mission stage. These collaborations foster creativity and teamwork among trainees and provide an immersive introduction to space engineering.

4. Join Our Live Information Sessions

Want to know more? ESA is hosting three online sessions:

  • February 5, 12:00 CET: Focus on the EGT Programme, featuring a Q&A session.
  • February 12, 17:00 CET: Join former ESA Research Fellow Maggie Lieu and current EGTs to discuss their experiences.
  • February 17, 12:00 CET: Learn about Young ESA and its vibrant activities, designed for EGTs and young professionals in the agency.

5. How to Apply

Once the positions are published in February, you can:

  1. Choose opportunities that match your qualifications and career ambitions—up to three applications can be submitted.
  2. Register and create a candidate profile with your CV and motivation letter.
  3. Apply and track your application status through your profile.

6. Timeline for the Selection Process

The selection process will occur between March and May 2026, with final selections made by June. The anticipated starting date will be around September or October.

Stay Updated!

To keep abreast of when these opportunities go live, consider subscribing to ESA’s career news or setting job alerts on their recruiting website.
