Singapore Startup Founder Anand Roy Believes Generative AI Can Revitalize the Music Industry

Revolutionizing Music Creation: Anand Roy’s Wubble AI Transforms the Industry

Revolutionizing Music Creation: Anand Roy and Wubble AI

Introduction

For Anand Roy, making music used to revolve around jamming with his progressive rock band in Bangalore. However, the landscape of music creation has dramatically shifted for him since co-founding Wubble AI in 2024. Now, making music is as simple as tapping a button, thanks to his innovative platform that allows users to generate, edit, and customize royalty-free music across over 60 genres.

A New Era for Music

Wubble AI emerged from a small office in Singapore’s bustling central business district. Within a short span, it has made waves in the industry, generating audio for renowned corporations such as Microsoft, HP, L’Oreal, and NBCUniversal. Adding to its impressive resume, Wubble’s AI-generated tunes provide a soothing soundtrack for commuters on the Taipei Metro.

Addressing Concerns About AI in Music

The rise of generative AI has sparked controversy in creative fields. Artists and musicians are voicing concerns over copyright infringement and the potential for AI to replace human creativity. However, Anand Roy views Wubble as a solution to an already problematic music sector. With streaming platforms like Spotify paying artists only micro-payments, many musicians struggle to earn a living. Roy believes Wubble’s model can change this narrative.

Lessons from Disney

Roy’s extensive experience at Disney, where he oversaw operations at its networks and studios across major cities, has shaped his understanding of the music industry. His tenure leading Disney’s music group revealed the burdensome process of music licensing, where intricate paperwork and extensive red tape often hindered deals.

“As I observed, so many licensing deals were stalled due to the complexity and cost involved,” Roy notes. In contrast, he believes that established music firms lack the incentive to simplify these processes.

A Collaborative Approach

Wubble takes a unique stance by collaborating directly with musicians. When working in genres like Latino hip hop, for example, Roy and his team partner with recording studios in cities like Buenos Aires or Rio de Janeiro to secure raw material for training their AI. This approach not only compensates artists with competitive one-time payments, but it also fosters a sense of partnership.

While Roy acknowledges that a one-time payment isn’t a foolproof solution, he is exploring innovative compensation models, including blockchain technology, to further support artists involved in Wubble’s development.

A Smarter Business Model

Experts like David Gunkel from Northern Illinois University argue that using artist-commissioned material to train AI is a more sustainable business practice. This strategy avoids the pitfalls of legal disputes that arise when AI companies rely on copyrighted content. By curating datasets thoughtfully and ensuring proper credit and compensation to artists, businesses can fortify their long-term viability in the industry.

The Future of Wubble AI

Currently focused on providing instrumental music and audio effects, Wubble AI is on the brink of a new offering: AI-generated voiceovers created from written scripts. Roy envisions this expansion will allow businesses to house their entire audio content workflow within Wubble, streamlining the process of music creation even further.

A Global Phenomenon

The rise of AI music startups is not limited to Wubble. Around the globe, companies like Suno and Moises are leveraging AI to simplify tune creation and to provide tools for artists. In Asia, Supertone, a Korean AI startup, has even gained attention for debuting a virtual K-pop girl group, SYNDI8, showcasing the transformative possibilities of AI in music.

At the recent Fortune Brainstorm AI conference in Singapore, Kyogu Lee, founder of Supertone, emphasized the concept of artists as “co-creators.” He believes this collaboration with technology empowers musicians to experiment with new ideas and forms of expression.

A Democratized Music Landscape

Roy shares a similar vision, advocating for a democratization of music creation. He asserts that the privilege of creating music should not be limited to those with the means to learn traditional instruments or access expensive recording equipment. “We believe that every human being should be able to create—and AI enables that now,” he states.

Conclusion

Anand Roy’s journey from metalhead to tech innovator encapsulates the potential of AI to reshape the music industry. With Wubble AI, he’s not only creating new opportunities for artists but also dismantling barriers that have long hindered the music creation process. As this technology continues to evolve, the possibilities for musicians and music lovers alike are endless.
