4iG Space and Defence CEO Sárhegyi Discusses Axiom Space Investment and Hungary’s Future in the Space Sector

Expanding Horizons: István Sárhegyi and 4iG Space and Defence’s Vision for Hungary’s Space Industry

4iG Space and Defence: Pioneering Hungary’s Role in the Global Space Industry

In an exciting era for the European space landscape, 4iG Space and Defence (4iG SDT) is emerging as a key player. As Hungary’s leading space company, 4iG SDT is not just looking to make waves in its home country but is also setting its sights on significant collaborations overseas. Recently, the company made headlines by becoming a strategic investor in the U.S.-based Axiom Space, solidifying its ambition to innovate and grow the space sector in Hungary.

Investment in Axiom Space: A Strategic Move

In October 2022, 4iG SDT took a momentous step by investing in Axiom Space, a company known for its pioneering efforts in building commercial space stations. This partnership aims to leverage Axiom’s $100 million project for the development of an Orbital Data Center (ODC), which aligns tightly with 4iG’s objectives.

According to István Sárhegyi, CEO of 4iG Space and Defence, this investment reflects a shared vision: "Our interest in Axiom Space comes from the understanding that satellites are evolving into a real-time data service ecosystem." The partnership promises to enhance Europe’s capacity for Earth Observation and satellite communication, bringing Hungary into a strategic alliance within the global space economy.

Building Sovereign Capabilities

Sárhegyi emphasizes that sovereignty in space is vital for Hungary’s national resilience and operational independence. Through its HUSAT program, 4iG aims to establish a comprehensive satellite infrastructure that ensures Hungary has reliable access to data services like Earth observation and communication without relying on external sources.

"Our focus is clear: we want to create trusted, service-oriented satellite capabilities that we operate end-to-end," says Sárhegyi. This commitment is crucial not just for commercial applications but also for national security and institutional users.

Interconnections Between Space and Defense

The intersection of space and defense is another focal point for 4iG SDT. With the technological landscape evolving, there’s a need for integrated systems that span land, air, and space. Sárhegyi notes that dual-use capabilities — where satellite technology directly supports defense applications — are essential for enhancing operational value.

"We aim to deliver seamless communication and data services that reinforce national and allied defense strategies," he adds. With 4iG’s recent investments and acquisitions, the company is positioning itself to be a leader in what Sárhegyi refers to as a comprehensive defense industry portfolio.

Cultivating the Hungarian Space Ecosystem

Sárhegyi sees 4iG SDT as a catalyst for developing a robust industrial ecosystem in Hungary. While the country has historically produced engineering talent for international missions, there has been a lack of large-scale industry. 4iG’s role is not only about building its own infrastructure but also about nurturing local manufacturers, technology companies, and research institutions, fostering collaborations that can propel Hungary into a more prominent position within the space sector.

"We want to move Hungary from being a contributor to being an operator and service provider in the global space value chain," explains Sárhegyi. By creating a platform that brings various stakeholders together, 4iG aims to transform Hungary into a reliable player in the international space ecosystem.

Looking Ahead

As the future unfolds, 4iG SDT is in the build-up phase, establishing essential infrastructure, capabilities, and international partnerships. The roadmap is set with an eye on launching the first satellites by 2028, and with plans to deliver high-value data and communication services.

With a meticulous approach centered on building a service-oriented space capability, 4iG is looking to create lasting value within and beyond Hungary. "By integrating the space segment with defense digitalization, we aim to create a sustainable ecosystem at the European level, reinforcing Hungary’s technological expertise," Sárhegyi asserts.

Conclusion

As Hungary’s main space company, 4iG Space and Defence is not only making significant strides within the national context but is also positioning itself as a vital player in the international space arena. Through strategic partnerships, a commitment to sovereignty, and a vision for an integrated future, 4iG SDT is poised to drive innovation and growth in the space sector, ensuring that Hungary has a prominent role on the global stage.

As we look forward to the future, it’s clear that under Sárhegyi’s leadership, 4iG is set to make meaningful contributions to the evolving space landscape, influencing both the technological and economic dimensions of Hungary’s participation in this dynamic field.
