On Friday, November 21, the University of Utah took a significant step in exploring the integration of artificial intelligence in education by hosting the Inaugural Student-led AI Symposium. Held at the Marriott Library, this pioneering event was a collaborative effort between students and Digital Learning Technologies (DLT), aiming to provide invaluable insights into how AI is transforming educational experiences.

A Vision Realized

The idea for the symposium was brought to life by Tony Sams, a manager for Learning Experience in DLT, in collaboration with Caren Frost, the Associate Vice President for Research Integrity and Compliance. With the enthusiastic support of student co-chairs Logan Bogesvang, Nicholas Pardon, Diya Mandot, and Jebediah Dean, the symposium attracted over 120 attendees eager to engage with the future of education.

Keynote Insights: Navigating the Future of AI

One of the highlights of the symposium was the keynote address by Warren Barkley, Vice President of Product Management at NVIDIA. Barkley, who contributed to significant technological advancements like WiFi and Google’s Gemini, shared his thoughts on the industry’s trajectory and offered strategic advice on leveraging AI successfully.

Treat AI as a skill, not a spectacle,” he emphasized, urging attendees to focus on the practical applications of AI rather than its allure. He stressed the importance of ethics and trust in shaping the future of AI, underscoring that successful integration in education hinges on human interaction. “Getting stuff done is all about people,” he stated, driving home the necessity of a people-centric approach in deploying AI technologies.

Barkley also introduced the concept of multimodal AI—encompassing audio, visuals, and text—which serves as a toolkit that users must adeptly apply in their endeavors.

Student Perspectives: A Co-Thinking Approach

Throughout the day, students actively participated in discussions regarding both the potential and ethical implications of AI. Mandot, along with U student Rishabh Saini, articulated a progressive view, positing that “AI is an amplifier … it reveals who you already are.” Rather than viewing AI as a form of cheating, they advocated for its adoption as a collaborative tool in education—a process they refer to as “co-thinking.”

Various students showcased how multiple sectors—including nutrition, finance, renewable energy, and medicine—utilize AI in their daily operations. Many even devised their own AI products, demonstrating practical applications ranging from dietary planning to stock market forecasting.

Faculty Panel: University Responsibilities in the AI Era

The symposium also featured a thought-provoking panel discussion addressing the university’s obligations concerning AI integration in education. Esteemed panelists, including Chief AI Officer Manish Parashar, Digital Matters Director Rebekah Cummings, Associate Professor of Architecture Jim Agutter, and Penny Atkins, Director of Research and Science at the Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute (SCI), shared their insights.

Parashar expressed optimism about AI’s potential in academia, asserting that it enhances the capabilities of both students and faculty. He emphasized the university’s commitment to ensuring accessibility to AI technology for all.

Cummings voiced the need for the university to better prepare students for the workforce, stressing the importance of effective AI utilization in this preparation. Agutter echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the necessity for students to develop critical thinking skills regarding AI applications.

Atkins highlighted the role of professors in using AI to enhance their teaching methods, advocating for broader engagement with various stakeholders in discussions about AI literacy.

The Student Voice: A Crucial Element in AI Development

Co-chair Jebediah Dean passionately encouraged students to engage in the AI discourse within higher education. “Students are native to this; they’re growing up inside it,” he noted, underscoring the wealth of experience they bring to the table. Dean hopes that participants in the symposium will continue to influence university and government policy, as their perspectives will guide the responsible evolution of AI.

In an interview with The Daily Utah Chronicle, Barkley echoed these sentiments, calling for ongoing dialogue about AI, given its rapid development. He appreciated the students’ energy and unique perspectives, emphasizing their essential role in shaping future discussions.

Jon Thomas, Director of DLT, envisions the symposium as the foundation for ongoing conversations surrounding AI’s place in higher education, identifying it as a pivotal opportunity to adapt and evolve with the changing landscape.
