Setting New Standards in Generative AI Training

IBM and AMD Join Forces to Revolutionize AI Infrastructure

In a significant leap for artificial intelligence, IBM and AMD have announced a groundbreaking collaboration aimed at providing advanced AI infrastructure to Zyphra, an innovative open-source AI research and product company based in San Francisco. This multi-year partnership is set to deliver one of the largest and most advanced capabilities for generative AI training available today, powered by an AMD stack on the robust IBM Cloud.

A Game-Changer in AI Training

Zyphra’s recent closure of a Series A financing round, valuing the company at $1 billion, underscores its ambition to establish a leading open-source superintelligence lab. The goal? To drive fundamental innovations in neural network architectures, long-term memory, and continual learning. The collaboration between IBM and AMD is pivotal for Zyphra, providing them with a dedicated cluster of AMD Instinct™ MI300X GPUs, which will be crucial for training frontier multimodal foundation models.

The Power of Collaboration

This relationship is the first large-scale deployment of an AI training cluster on IBM Cloud utilizing AMD technologies, including the MI300X GPUs and AMD Pensando™ Pollara 400 AI NICs. Initial deployment began in early September, with future expansions planned for 2026. The advanced training cluster will enable Zyphra to develop multimodal foundation models that span language, vision, and audio—a vital resource for powering Maia, a general-purpose superagent designed to enhance productivity for knowledge workers across various enterprises.

Driving Innovation at Unprecedented Speeds

IBM and AMD are uniquely positioned to scale computational resources in response to the growing demands of Zyphra’s model training needs. This partnership isn’t merely about delivering hardware; it’s about integrating advanced computing capabilities to redefine the way organizations harness AI technologies. Both companies have a history of innovation, with IBM’s established cloud infrastructure complementing AMD’s high-efficiency compute architectures.

Unlocking New Possibilities

Last year, IBM and AMD initiated a collaboration focused on delivering AMD Instinct MI300X accelerators as a service on IBM Cloud, creating a hybrid infrastructure that improves performance, efficiency, and scalability for generative AI models and high-performance computing (HPC) applications. This infrastructure establishes a foundational layer for scaling AI that incorporates hybrid multi-cloud options, enhancing the return on investment (ROI) for clients’ generative AI deployments.

A Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, IBM and AMD are committed to developing next-generation quantum-centric supercomputing architectures. This approach merges IBM’s leadership in quantum computing with AMD’s strengths in high-performance computing and AI acceleration. Together, they aim to pioneer advancements that will redefine what’s possible in AI.

Voices of Leadership

Krithik Puthalath, CEO and Chairman of Zyphra, expressed enthusiasm for this collaboration, noting, "This marks the first time AMD’s full-stack training platform has been successfully integrated on IBM Cloud. We’re excited to push the boundaries in developing frontier models using AMD silicon."

Alan Peacock, GM of IBM Cloud, highlighted the significance of scaling AI workloads: "Faster, more efficient scaling is key for achieving ROI for both established enterprises and emerging companies. We are committed to supporting Zyphra’s strategic roadmap in AI."

Philip Guido, EVP and Chief Commercial Officer of AMD, reinforced the innovative spirit of the partnership: "This collaboration sets a new standard in AI infrastructure, combining our leadership in high-performance computing with IBM’s cloud expertise to support Zyphra’s pioneering efforts."

Conclusion

The partnership between IBM, AMD, and Zyphra marks the dawn of a new era in AI infrastructure. As these companies work together to revolutionize model training capabilities, they are positioned to lead the way in developing advanced AI solutions that not only enhance productivity but also drive real-world outcomes. The future of AI is poised for unprecedented growth, thanks to this powerful collaboration.
