Reach for the Sky Festival: Where Space Dreams Soared

Celebrating Futures: The Reach for the Sky Festival Inspires Girls in Aviation and STEM Fields at Spaceport Cornwall

Inspiring the Next Generation: The Reach for the Sky Festival at Spaceport Cornwall

This year, the Reach for the Sky Festival at Spaceport Cornwall brought together over 1,000 attendees for a day filled with exploration, innovation, and inspiration. Organized by TECgirls, a division of TECwomen CIC, the festival aimed to encourage girls to pursue careers in aviation, aerospace, and STEM fields.

A Resilient Spirit Amidst the Rain

Despite the challenging weather, which included some persistent rain, the event was a resounding success, selling out and welcoming more than 500 girls. Their enthusiasm was palpable as they engaged in a variety of hands-on activities, proving that nothing could dampen their spirits.

A World of Interactive Learning

The festival featured over 20 interactive exhibits that captivated the imagination of young attendees. Highlights included:

  • Rocket Launches: Giving girls a taste of the thrill of space exploration.
  • Flight Simulators: Allowing them to experience piloting an aircraft firsthand.
  • Drone Demonstrations: Showcasing the exciting developments in aerial technology.
  • AI Coding and LEGO Robotics: Offering a glimpse into the future of technology through creative building and programming.

Additionally, a travelling museum from Discovering 42 added an educational yet entertaining dimension, enriching the festival experience.

Meeting Role Models

One of the festival’s standout features was the opportunity for attendees to meet and interact with female pilots and engineers. Sitting in real aircraft cockpits and engaging with role models provided girls a unique chance to envision their futures in aviation and aerospace. These interactions highlighted not only the technological advancements but also the passion and dedication of women in these fields.

Community Support and Contribution

The event couldn’t have achieved this success without the remarkable support of numerous organizations. Partners like Kids Invent Stuff, Leonardo Helicopters, and Cornwall College, among others, played crucial roles in facilitating the various activities.

More than 100 volunteers from groups such as RAF Cadets and Girl Guides lent their support, showcasing a community dedication to fostering interest in STEM among girls. Their efforts ensured that everything ran smoothly, allowing young attendees to focus solely on learning and having fun.

Impressive Feedback

Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with 98% expressing satisfaction and 100% indicating they would recommend the event to others. Most importantly, 94% of children left feeling more excited about aviation and aerospace. One attendee summarized the day beautifully: "It was a day of fun, it was a day of laughter… It was heartwarming."

Another parent added, "It’s great for girls to feel that there is something aimed directly at them and that they are just as capable as anyone else of excelling in technical careers."

Looking Forward

The Reach for the Sky Festival has not only sparked interest but also built a community of support for girls interested in STEM. With such a successful inaugural event, expectations are high for the next festival, and we eagerly anticipate what the future holds for young women in these fields.

The festival successfully laid the groundwork to inspire the next generation of female leaders in aviation, aerospace, and technology, proving that with passion and guidance, the sky is indeed the limit.
