At the recent Fortune Brainstorm AI conference in Singapore, Rui Ma, founder of Tech Buzz China, underscored that robotics has emerged as a forefront area for AI application in China. Paul Triolo, a partner at the DGA-Albright Stonebridge Group, pointed out that the majority of Chinese AI companies have shifted towards open-source and weight models. China’s prominent AI models, such as those from DeepSeek and Alibaba, highlight the advantages of being open-source. Helen Toner, director at Georgetown’s Center for Security and Emerging Technologies, articulated this concept of building “soft power” through openness. Meanwhile, the U.S. industry giants—OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google—continue to maintain closed-source practices.
