Interview: Start-Up Creating Space-Based Technology for Infrastructure Health Monitoring

Geospatial Ventures Secures £2.5M UK Space Agency Funding for Innovative Infrastructure Monitoring System

This heading encapsulates the key points of the article, emphasizing the funding, the company’s focus, and its potential impact on infrastructure monitoring.

Geospatial Ventures: Pioneering Safety Monitoring Through Space Technology

In an exciting development for the geospatial and infrastructure sectors, Nottingham-based start-up Geospatial Ventures has secured a share of a £2.5 million funding package from the UK Space Agency (UKSA). This funding aims to propel the company’s innovative project to harness satellite data for monitoring the health of critical infrastructure across the UK.

A Leap Forward in Infrastructure Monitoring

The funding announcement is part of a broader initiative to support five projects utilizing satellite data to enhance public services in the UK. UKSA’s director of missions and capabilities, Harshbir Sangha, emphasized the importance of melding innovative space technologies with public sector needs. He remarked, “These initiatives show how satellite data can drive efficiency, sustainability, and better decision-making.”

Geospatial Ventures is at the forefront of this movement with its Core: Corner Reflector Enabled Remote Sensing project. This ground-breaking system employs advanced radar technology and artificial intelligence (AI) to continuously monitor structures such as buildings and bridges. The aim is to detect minute movements that could indicate potential safety issues, all while providing a safer and more efficient alternative to traditional manual inspections.

Why Geospatial Ventures Stands Out

Mona Bhatia, operations director at Geospatial Ventures, describes their system as a complementary tool to existing remote monitoring technologies. While existing methods have their merits, Bhatia asserts that their technology can significantly enhance the accuracy and effectiveness of infrastructure assessments. The system can monitor slow changes in structures over time, acting as an early warning mechanism for asset managers.

For instance, Bhatia highlights the tool’s potential to identify “hotspots” that require further examination. This is particularly useful for assets like roads and railways that are vulnerable to external stresses such as landslides. Although the technology cannot entirely replace ground-based sensors, it significantly reduces the cost associated with monitoring extensive networks.

Cost-Effectiveness: A Game-Changer

One of the major attractions of Geospatial Ventures’ solution is its cost-effectiveness. Traditional monitoring systems, like those used by Network Rail for constant vigilance on landslide-prone embankments, can be resource-intensive. In contrast, Geospatial Ventures promises a broader monitoring capability at a fraction of the cost. Bhatia reports, “You’d be looking at full coverage of networks to complement more targeted surveying and monitoring.”

The Role of Artificial Intelligence

An essential component of Geospatial Ventures’ technology is its use of AI to enhance monitoring capabilities. By aggregating and correlating data from various sources—including soil moisture and weather metrics—this tool will help identify patterns that may otherwise go unnoticed. Although its primary function in this project isn’t to predict outcomes, the ultimate aim is to develop capabilities for both monitoring and prediction of structural behavior.

Bhatia expressed enthusiasm about the potential applications of their monitoring tool, not just for infrastructure assessment but also for planning and development projects. With the ability to utilize historical data from satellites like Sentinel, the team can evaluate land changes dating back to 2014. This tool could provide invaluable insights from pre-construction monitoring through the construction phases and into post-project evaluations.

Looking Ahead

Geospatial Ventures’ pioneering work in the realm of space-based infrastructure monitoring represents a significant step toward integrating advanced technology into vital public services. As the UK aims to establish itself as a leader in space-enabled public services, projects like these reflect the necessity of innovation in addressing challenges facing society today.

With the advancements being spearheaded by Geospatial Ventures, the future of infrastructure safety monitoring is brighter, more efficient, and incredibly promising. Keep an eye on this start-up as they continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible with satellite technology, offering not just improvements in safety but also a commitment to sustainability.
