Strengthening Europe’s Technological Autonomy: Nokia Leads the PROACTIF Initiative
In a significant boost for Europe’s technological landscape, Nokia has been chosen to spearhead the PROACTIF project, a bold initiative funded by the European Union’s Chips Joint Undertaking. This pioneering project aims to fortify Europe’s resilience and leadership in Embedded Cyber-Physical Systems (ECS) technologies, while also supporting the autonomy of the European Drone and Robotics industry. With a consortium comprising 42 partners from 13 countries, PROACTIF is poised to make substantial strides in critical infrastructure surveillance across Europe.
Building a European Tech Powerhouse
The PROACTIF consortium anticipates generating approximately EUR 90 million in revenue, launching 50 innovative products, and filing over 15 new industry patents by 2035. These achievements will not only enhance market share but also position Europe as a leader in technological innovation. The project is expected to foster dozens of collaborations, create hundreds of new jobs, and bring in more than EUR 40 million in additional investments.
Thomas Eder, Head of Embedded Wireless Solutions at Nokia, emphasizes that the company’s extensive expertise is pivotal in establishing drone technology best practices. He notes that, “This project demonstrates Nokia’s commitment to fostering innovation and resilience across Europe.” Through partnerships with leading organizations, PROACTIF is set to tackle critical challenges in security and sustainability, ultimately delivering meaningful benefits to society.
A Comprehensive Approach to Emergency Management
Under Nokia’s leadership, PROACTIF will redefine how Europe manages emergency situations and critical infrastructure. The consortium unites academic institutions, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and industry leaders to develop advanced, cost-efficient, and eco-friendly unmanned vehicle (UxV) systems tailored to meet European civil security needs.
The project will focus on developing nine advanced technology building blocks and five state-of-the-art UxV platforms. Emphasizing interoperability, autonomy, and rapid deployment, these innovations aim to meet the pressing societal demands of the European market.
Utilizing UxV technologies enhances situational awareness by providing a more comprehensive understanding of incident locations and severity through efficient and frequent sensor data gathering. As a result, decision-makers will be better equipped to respond to emergencies, ultimately safeguarding communities across Europe.
A Successful Collaboration with Spinverse
Nokia’s success in securing funding for PROACTIF was greatly aided by Spinverse, which provided vital proposal preparation services during the project’s development phase. Their expertise in EU funding mechanisms and ability to coordinate complex consortia played a crucial role in shaping a competitive project proposal.
Eder points out, “Spinverse’s support during the proposal phase of PROACTIF was instrumental in securing funding for one of Europe’s most ambitious initiatives in unmanned and robotics technologies.” Their ongoing collaboration with the PROACTIF consortium will ensure seamless project management and execution from the kick-off onwards.
Looking Ahead
The PROACTIF project represents a significant step towards enhancing Europe’s technological resilience and leadership in ECS technologies. By bringing together a diverse coalition of experts and organizations, this initiative not only aims to elevate the European Drone and Robotics industry but also strives to create a safer, more sustainable future for all.
