OpenAI Collaborates with Figure to Develop Humanoid Robots, Receives Investment from Microsoft, Nvidia, and Amazon’s Jeff Bezos
OpenAI’s Latest Venture: Developing Humanoid Robots
OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence research lab, is making waves in the robotics industry with its latest venture. The company has announced plans to collaborate with Figure, a robotics startup in California, to develop next-generation AI models for humanoid robots. This project is also receiving investment from tech giants Microsoft, Nvidia, and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
Figure recently raised $675 million in its Series B funding round, with OpenAI among the companies investing in the startup. This partnership aims to accelerate the commercial deployment of Figure’s robots, enabling them to process and reason from incoming human language. By combining OpenAI’s research with Figure’s expertise in robotics hardware and software, the collaboration holds great promise for the future of humanoid robots.
OpenAI’s Vice President of Product and Partnerships, Peter Welinder, expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating, “We see a path with Figure to explore what humanoid robots can achieve when powered by highly capable multimodal models.” The tweet from OpenAI also hints at expanding its multimodal models to robotic perception, reasoning, and interaction, leveraging the latest advancements in AI technology.
With Figure aiming to develop a general-purpose machine that can eliminate the need for unsafe and undesirable jobs, the upcoming robot is set to compete with Tesla’s Optimus bot from Elon Musk. The team behind Figure includes robotics experts from companies like Boston Dynamics, Tesla, Google DeepMind, and Archer Aviation, showcasing a wealth of talent in the field.
While Figure has attracted significant investment from tech giants like Microsoft and Jeff Bezos, OpenAI’s contribution of $5 million underscores its commitment to the project. However, there are still challenges ahead for Figure’s robots to become truly useful. A recent demo of the Figure 01 robot making coffee highlighted the machine’s capabilities but also revealed limitations in its interaction with humans.
As OpenAI and Figure continue to push the boundaries of AI and robotics, the potential for humanoid robots powered by advanced AI models is an exciting prospect. With innovation driving progress in the field, we may soon see a new era of intelligent and capable robots emerge, transforming industries and daily life as we know it.
