THeMIS Unmanned Ground Vehicles in Ukraine to Feature Starlink Satellite Connectivity

The use of unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) in conflict zones is becoming increasingly common, with the latest innovation coming from the Estonian-made THeMIS UGVs operating in Ukraine. These vehicles will now feature Starlink satellite connectivity, allowing them to be operated from thousands of kilometers away. This development opens up new possibilities for remote operation and control of military assets, making it easier and safer for soldiers on the ground.

Milrem Robotics, the United Arab Emirates-owned and Estonia-based manufacturer of the THeMIS UGVs, will unveil a specially equipped vehicle at the Eurosatory 2024 trade show next week. This vehicle, designed for cargo transportation, will be able to connect to the Starlink internet satellites operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX. This integration will enable seamless data transmission, command reception, and vital information relay in real-time, regardless of the vehicle’s location on the battlefield.

The expertise of Dutch datalinks firm AEC Skyline was sought out for the integration of the Starlink connectivity feature, ensuring a smooth and reliable connection for the THeMIS UGVs. The use of the Starlink satellite system requires a ground terminal, which SpaceX deployed to Ukraine shortly after the Russian invasion in February 2022. As of June 2023, there were tens of thousands of terminals in Ukraine, including 500 purchased by the U.S. Department of Defense.

The Starlink satellites operate in low-Earth orbit, providing better performance for the system’s intended applications. This closer proximity to the earth ensures faster and more reliable communication for the UGVs operating in the field. Despite the advanced technology and capabilities of these vehicles, there have been reports of captured and damaged models in conflict zones. However, Milrem Robotics has not commented on these incidents, focusing instead on improving and enhancing the capabilities of their UGVs.

Overall, the integration of Starlink satellite connectivity into the THeMIS UGVs marks a significant advancement in remote operation and control of military assets. This technology has the potential to revolutionize the way military operations are conducted, providing greater flexibility and efficiency for soldiers in the field. As conflicts continue to evolve and new challenges arise, innovations like these will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and effectiveness of military forces worldwide.
