North East Space Conference Highlights Region’s Role in UK Space Industry

The North East Space Conference showcased the region’s important role in the UK space industry, bringing together experts, academics, and industry leaders to discuss the growth and potential of the sector. With more than 200 attendees from around the world, the event highlighted the exciting work already happening in the North East and beyond.

One of the key topics of discussion was the changing opportunities for the space industry in the region and what this growth means for local universities. The conference, now in its 10th year, was organized by Space North East England and sponsored by industry giants like Lockheed Martin and Orbex.

Representatives from companies like Lockheed Martin, Orbit Fab, and Jacobs participated in presentations and panel discussions, emphasizing their commitment to expanding the space industry in the North East. Nik Smith, Lockheed Martin Space regional director, expressed the company’s excitement to be part of the conference and their ongoing investment in the UK space industry.

One major initiative highlighted at the conference was the North East Space Skills and Technology Centre (NESST), a £50m project in partnership with Northumbria University and the UK Space Agency. This center aims to create a hub for space technology and provide opportunities for skill development in the region.

Professor Clive Roberts, Executive Dean (Science) at Durham University, emphasized the importance of supporting the North East space sector for regional growth and innovation. He highlighted the university’s collaborative efforts with businesses, government organizations, and the third sector to drive innovation in the space industry.
