Uncover the Third Space by Studio Saar located in Rajasthan

Studio Saar Completes Third Space in Udaipur, India for Local Not-for-Profit Organization Dharohar

Studio Saar recently completed Third Space in Udaipur, India, a unique project commissioned by the local not-for-profit organization Dharohar. This building combines multiple uses and purposes, providing affordable resources to the Rajasthan city in one convenient location.

Third Space serves as a place for learning and working with makers to support the preservation of crafts, a leisure center offering hands-on activities such as a maker’s space and Tinkering Lab, a venue for performing arts and exhibitions, a space for social gatherings and relaxation in its open-air courtyards, and a hub for community well-being, retail, and co-working.

The design of Third Space was developed in collaboration with Dharohar, emphasizing principles of openness, accessibility, and inclusivity. The building reflects the Indian vernacular architecture and features intricate details such as an inverted stepwell connecting underground parking levels and a public plaza. The exterior is wrapped in a perforated facade made of marble and steel, incorporating sustainable practices like using waste materials from nearby marble quarries in the construction.

The center’s environmentally friendly features include passive cooling systems, native trees and plants for wildlife restoration, and the use of marble dust in the concrete mix. Studio Saar aims to create a space that encourages collaboration and curiosity, inspiring individuals with similar interests to connect and engage with each other.

An exhibition titled ‘Craft, Community, Connection’ by Studio Saar will be showcased at the Crafts Council Gallery in London as part of the London Festival of Architecture 2024. This project exemplifies Studio Saar’s commitment to innovative design that promotes sustainability, community engagement, and cultural exchange.
