Aber’s Newest Sensation: Robotic Dragon Pet Bowing for the Public

“Dr Patricia Shaw Unveils Robotic Dragon at Smart Home Lab for Independence Testing”

Dr Patricia Shaw, a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Computer Science at Aberystwyth University, is at the forefront of research into how robots can help older people live independently for longer. She is leading the team behind the development of a new robotic pet dragon, which will be showcased at Aberystwyth University’s BeachLab event on Saturday 15 June.

The dragon, designed to interact with its human companions and provide valuable data for care planning, is just one of the many robots housed in the University’s Smart Home Lab. This lab is dedicated to testing and developing robots that can assist with various tasks and improve the quality of life for older individuals.

At BeachLab, visitors will also have the opportunity to see other robots in action, including a smart wheelchair, flying drones for disaster communication, and even a trick-performing dog. Attendees can also learn how to build their own robots and participate in robot driving challenges.

Dr Shaw will be speaking at Aberystwyth Science Cafe on Monday 17 June, discussing technology for independent living. She is committed to advancing the field of robotics and showcasing the potential benefits that this research can bring to society.

Throughout the week, Aberystwyth University will host the Robot Olympics, in collaboration with Ceredigion County Council. This event will engage over 300 pupils from Ceredigion schools in team competitions involving building and adapting robots.

With robots becoming an increasingly integral part of our daily lives, the work being done at Aberystwyth University’s Smart Home Lab is paving the way for innovative solutions to support older individuals in living independently. Dr Shaw and her team are dedicated to improving the quality of life for older people through the development of companion and assistant robots that can enhance daily activities and provide valuable support.

Be sure to visit BeachLab on 15 June to see the robotic dragon in action and participate in the exciting lineup of robotic events. Who knows, you may even come up with the perfect name for this friendly robotic companion!
