NTT Introduces Space Division, Unveils Enhanced Access Technology

NTT Launches C89 Project to Accelerate Space Business Development

Space-based communications are on the rise, and Japanese telco NTT is at the forefront of this growing industry. With the launch of NTT C89, the NTT Constellation 89 Project, the company is poised to accelerate business and technology development in the field of space communications.

There are several factors contributing to the growth of space-based communications, including the reduced cost of satellite launches, the increasing demand for services delivered from space, and the Japanese government’s space policy initiatives. NTT plans to establish focus areas in the space business field to provide solutions that meet customer needs and promote further expansion in the industry.

One key aspect of NTT’s C89 business is the management of various satellite systems, including geostationary orbit (GEO) satellites, low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites for observation services, and high-altitude platform station (HAPS) systems. By partnering with companies like Amazon’s Project Kuiper for LEO satellite-enabled communications services, NTT aims to offer a comprehensive range of space-based communication solutions.

NTT has been particularly active in the HAPS sector, recently participating in a successful 5G communication verification test using HAPS and investing in Aalto HAPS, a subsidiary of Airbus. This strategic alliance aims to commercialize connectivity and earth observation services using HAPS in Japan and across Asia, with a target commercial launch in 2026.

The possibilities of space-based communications are growing, and NTT is positioning itself as a leader in this exciting industry. With a focus on innovation and collaboration, the company is set to revolutionize the way we communicate and connect in the vast expanse of space.
