Transformation of East Lothian Community Hospital space into a more inviting environment

NHS Lothian Charity Transforms Speech and Language Therapy Rooms for Children and Young People

Art and design play a significant role in creating a welcoming and therapeutic environment, especially in healthcare settings. The recent transformation of speech and language therapy rooms at East Lothian Community Hospital is a perfect example of how thoughtful design can positively impact the well-being of patients, especially children and young people.

The original therapy rooms were described as cold and clinical, lacking the warmth and welcoming atmosphere needed for successful therapy sessions. However, with the support of Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity and Coldstones Charitable Trust, the rooms have been completely revamped to provide a more engaging and stimulating space for both patients and their families.

Caroline Anderson, a speech and language therapist at the hospital, highlighted the importance of creating a relaxing environment for therapy sessions. The new design features colorful walls, interactive elements, and comfortable floor cushions, all of which contribute to a fun and engaging atmosphere for children. The addition of a floor mat and orange cushions also allows for more flexibility in therapy sessions, particularly for younger patients who may need to move around during their sessions.

Susan Grant, Tonic Arts manager at NHS Lothian Charity, emphasized the careful consideration that went into designing the new therapy rooms to meet the specific needs of young patients. By creating a space that is child-friendly and inviting, the hope is that therapy sessions will be more enjoyable and successful for the children involved.

Pippa Johnston, deputy CEO at Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of creating welcoming and relaxing spaces for children in healthcare settings. The new therapy rooms at East Lothian Community Hospital are a shining example of how art and design can transform clinical spaces into environments that promote healing and well-being.

Overall, the refurbishment of the speech and language therapy rooms at East Lothian Community Hospital is a testament to the power of art and therapeutic design in healthcare. By creating a bright and engaging space for children and young people, NHS Lothian Charity and its partners have shown a commitment to providing the best possible care for their patients.
