Cumbria students will be building robots to handle nuclear waste

“Innovative Robot Design Challenge for 16-to-18-Year-Olds in Cumbria”

The Robotics and AI Collaboration (RAICo) and the Industrial Solutions Hub (iSH) have teamed up to create an exciting and challenging opportunity for young aspiring technologists in Cumbria. The ‘sprint challenge’ they have organized aims to encourage students from West Lakes Academy and the Energy Coast University Technical College to design and build nuclear waste-transporting robots.

This creative challenge will stretch the students’ coding, engineering, and creativity skills as they work towards showcasing their robots at the ‘Harnessing Robotics and AI for Challenging Environments’ event in May 2024. This event will not only provide a platform for the students to display their projects but also offer them the chance to network with industry professionals and learn more about potential career paths in the sector.

The focus of the challenge on nuclear waste management mirrors the real-world challenges faced by the decommissioning industry, making it a valuable learning experience for the participants. RAICo, a collaboration between leading organizations in the field, is at the forefront of advancing robotics and AI in decommissioning and fusion engineering. The iSH, based in West Cumbria, plays a vital role in facilitating connections between industry, academia, and research facilities for growth in the region.

Representatives from RAICo and iSH are actively supporting the students throughout the project, providing guidance and expertise to help them bring their ideas to life. Sophie Finlinson from RAICo highlights the importance of this educational outreach initiative in providing practical exposure to STEM subjects and potentially steering students towards a successful career in the industry.

Hannah Pears from iSH emphasizes the unique opportunity that the students have to showcase their skills, interact with industry experts, and gain valuable experience for their future endeavors. The sprint challenge serves as a platform for these young technologists to shine and make a mark in the industry.

As the students dive into this exciting challenge, they are not only building robots but also paving the way for a future filled with innovation and technological advancements in challenging environments.
