The Growing Importance of Composite 3D Printing in Manufacturing and Development

Composite materials have been gaining popularity in the additive manufacturing industry, with a wide range of applications and advantages. In a recent blog post, we explored how the Institute of Industrial New Materials in Dezhou, China, is utilizing composite 3D printing to revolutionize product development and manufacturing processes.

One key advantage of using composites in 3D printing is their strength-to-weight ratio, which makes them ideal for applications where strength and lightness are critical. Composites for FFF 3D printing typically consist of a polymer matrix reinforced with materials such as glass fiber or carbon fiber, combining the best properties of both materials.

The Institute of Industrial New Materials has recognized the potential of composite 3D printing and has established itself as a pioneer in this field. By partnering with INTAMSYS, the institute has spearheaded initiatives to apply 3D printing to the development of composite product parts.

One of the major benefits of composite 3D printing is the ability to create complex geometries and optimize designs for cost and time efficiency. For example, the institute successfully produced intake manifolds for an aircraft engine using FFF 3D printing with PEEK-CF material. By leveraging the capabilities of the FUNMAT PRO 610HT printer, the institute was able to achieve a 30% weight reduction and surpass the mechanical strength of traditional injection-molded products.

Additionally, the institute collaborated with a Chinese university to develop a robotic composite material manipulator arm using composite 3D printing. By combining the internal support structure printed with PEEK-CF with a pre-impregnated layup of carbon fiber, the team was able to create a lightweight, robust component with structural strength comparable to aluminum alloys.

Overall, the Institute of Industrial New Materials has demonstrated the significant advantages of using composite 3D printing in both replacing and supplementing traditional manufacturing processes. With a focus on efficiency, cost reduction, and high-performance parts, composite 3D printing offers a promising solution for the future of additive manufacturing.
