Baidu’s ‘Ernie Bot’ Surpasses 200 Million Users, Emerging as a Competitor to ChatGPT, Reports Say

Baidu CEO Robin Li Announces Doubling of Users for Ernie Bot

Baidu CEO Robin Li says number of users has doubled since December

In the fast-paced world of artificial intelligence and chatbots, competition is fierce. And in China, Baidu’s Ernie Bot is leading the charge with over 200 million users – a number that has doubled since December.

At a conference in Shenzhen, Baidu CEO Robin Li shared some impressive statistics about Ernie Bot’s growth. Not only does the chatbot have over 200 million users, but its application programming interface (API) is being used a staggering 200 million times every day. This means that users are relying on Ernie Bot to conduct tasks multiple times a day, showcasing the chatbot’s popularity and usefulness.

Additionally, Ernie Bot has attracted 85,000 enterprise clients, highlighting its success in the business world. Li also mentioned that Baidu has started generating revenue from Ernie, showcasing the chatbot’s potential as a valuable asset for the company.

Ernie Bot was the first locally developed ChatGPT-like chatbot to be announced in China, but it faced regulatory hurdles before being approved for public release. Unlike many other countries, China requires companies to obtain approval before rolling out generative AI services, and Ernie Bot was one of the first eight AI chatbots to receive such authorization.

However, Ernie Bot is facing tough competition from rival domestic AI services, particularly Alibaba-backed Moonshot AI’s “Kimi” chatbot. Recent data shows that Kimi is quickly catching up to Ernie Bot in terms of user visits, with a 321.6 percent increase in visits from February to March.

While Chinese generative AI services still lag behind their Western counterparts, China is quickly ramping up its approvals for AI services as it seeks to compete with the United States in the tech sector. With over 117 large AI models already approved, it’s clear that China is serious about establishing itself as a major player in the AI industry.

Overall, Baidu’s Ernie Bot is a standout success story in the world of AI chatbots, with impressive user numbers and growing revenue streams. As competition heats up in the AI space, it will be interesting to see how Ernie Bot continues to evolve and stay ahead of the pack.
