Boston Dynamics shifts focus to electric motor-driven robots, following the lead of Chinese tech companies

This announcement from Boston Dynamics marks a significant shift in the robotics industry, as the company moves towards electric motor-driven robots and away from hydraulic-powered humanoid robots. This decision comes as Chinese tech companies continue to dominate the field of robotics, particularly in the development of electric-driven robots.

Hydraulic robots, like Boston Dynamics’ Atlas, have traditionally been known for their limb strength, but their hydraulic systems are complex and slower to respond. In contrast, electric motors are lighter, more flexible, faster, and cost less. Boston Dynamics’ new electric-powered Atlas model features individual electric motors at each joint, giving it a wider range of motion and capabilities that were not possible with its hydraulic predecessor.

Chinese robotics companies, such as Unitree Robotics, have been at the forefront of developing electric humanoid robots. Unitree’s electric humanoid robot, H1, has been praised for its unmatched speed, strength, mobility, and flexibility. The company’s success at international robotics competitions further solidifies China’s position as a leader in robotics technology.

The shift towards electric motor-driven robots in the robotics industry highlights China’s advancements in technological innovation. Chinese companies are also leading the way in autonomous driving technology, with a focus on integrating lidar systems with cameras to improve the performance of their autonomous vehicles.

While Japan remains a leader in the production of high-quality motors and mechanical parts, China is rapidly gaining market share in the robotics industry. As of 2023, China ranked first in the world in the number of humanoid robot patent applications and valid patents, surpassing Japan. This divergence in technological adoption has fueled innovation among upstream suppliers, with Chinese firms leading in the filing of patents related to lidar technology.

The decision by Boston Dynamics to focus on electric motor-driven robots underscores the growing importance of Chinese tech companies in the robotics industry. As China continues to innovate and lead in robotics technology, it will be interesting to see how this shift impacts the future of humanoid robotics worldwide.
