Installer No. 87: What’s Hot This Week
Hi, friends! Welcome to Installer No. 87—your go-to guide for all the best and Verge-iest content in the world. If you’re new here, a warm welcome! It’s officially “Too Hot Now” week, and if you want to catch up, all previous editions are available at the Installer homepage.
This past week has been a whirlwind. I’ve been diving into various topics—from Sabrina Carpenter’s latest projects to Khaby Lame’s quirky content. I’m also getting caught up with Barbarians at the Gate, binge-watching all the Ben Schwartz content I can find on YouTube, and thoroughly enjoying Dakota Johnson’s current press tour. And, of course, I’m trying to clear my inbox before heading off on parental leave. So, it’s… going.
I’ve got some exciting updates for you this week, including a highly-anticipated new browser, a photo editor update, a trailer for an underwhelming movie, and a classic Steve Jobs speech. Apologies for a slightly shorter issue this week; life has been chaotic, but I didn’t want to leave you hanging. Just a heads-up: we’ll be off next week for Juneteenth, vacation, and summer chaos, but we’ll be back in full force afterward. Let’s dive in!
The Highlights of This Week
New Browsers and Updates
Arc has introduced a new AI-focused browser, sparking interesting discussions within the community. While I’m not planning to leave Arc anytime soon, Dia’s design features are truly fascinating.
Snapseed 3.0 is back with a bang! I nearly forgot about this fantastic photo editor, but this update brings a refreshed look and exciting editing tools. Currently available only on iOS, I’m hoping the Android version drops soon.
Media & Entertainment
I was entranced by “I Tried To Make Something In America,” which sheds light on the complexities of bringing manufacturing back to the U.S. It’s an insightful companion piece exploring the challenges involved.
Don’t miss the F1 haptic trailer! It’s a unique experience that syncs with the car’s sounds and vibrations—trust me, it’s as cool as it sounds, even if you aren’t a movie buff.
For Android lovers, there’s much to anticipate in Android 16—from improved Live Updates to essential accessibility features, although the colorful new look and desktop mode will come later.
If you’re into electric scooters, check out the Infinite Machine Olto—it’s got that futuristic vibe straight out of Blade Runner! At a steep $3,500, it’s a splurge but worth a look.
Fujifilm’s X-E5 has also caught my attention. It’s like the X100VI but with interchangeable lenses. Any photography enthusiast will want to keep an eye on it!
If you’re looking for something lighter, the two-part documentary Call Her Alex on Alex Cooper explores themes of internet connectivity and understanding people in a modern context.
Steve Jobs’ 2005 Commencement Speech has been re-released with new materials to celebrate its 20th anniversary. It’s a timeless piece that remains worth your time.
Finally, Dune: Awakening promises an open-world survival experience that has captured my interest, especially for its ornithopters!
