According to the research, nearly half of all medical advice offered by these AI platforms is misleading or problematic, sparking renewed debate about their role in everyday health queries.

The Study Breakdown

Researchers from the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom evaluated five widely used AI platforms: ChatGPT, Gemini, Meta AI, Grok, and DeepSeek. They posed ten questions across five health-related categories, assessing the responses to understand their reliability. The results were concerning: around 50% of the responses were flagged as problematic, with approximately 20% deemed highly problematic.

Interestingly, the performance of these chatbots varied by question type. They fared better with closed-ended questions, particularly on topics like vaccines and cancer. However, when faced with open-ended queries, or questions regarding complex areas like stem cell treatments and nutrition, accuracy significantly declined.

Confidence Over Accuracy

One of the most troubling findings was that the responses from these AI platforms were often delivered with an air of confidence, misleading users into believing they were receiving expert advice. Despite this, none of the platforms produced a fully accurate and comprehensive list of references to back their claims. Additionally, Meta AI was notably cautious, only refusing to answer twice, which raises questions about the thresholds for providing information.

Implications for Public Health

The ramifications of this study are complex and far-reaching. As more individuals turn to AI chatbots for health information—OpenAI claims over 200 million users query health and wellness topics on ChatGPT weekly—the risk of misinformation looms large. Unlike medical professionals, these AI systems lack the necessary clinical judgment to make diagnoses or treatment decisions, further compounding public health concerns.

While AI has the potential to democratize access to healthcare information, the unchecked deployment of such tools can amplify misinformation. It’s crucial for both developers and users to understand the limitations of these systems, especially when it comes to health communication.

A Call for Caution

The study’s authors urge a reassessment of how these AI systems are used in public health communications. They highlight the potential behavioral limitations in AI chatbots, emphasizing that responses that sound authoritative can often be flawed. The continuing evolution of AI technologies necessitates adequate public education and oversight to ensure their safe and effective use.
