This partnership aims to enhance commercial-scale data collection and yield forecasting, leveraging real-time metrics to benefit strawberry growers significantly.

Enter Thorvald: The Game-Changer

At the heart of this collaboration is the Thorvald robot, engineered by Saga Robotics. Originally designed for UV-C treatments, Thorvald has already made a significant impact, treating approximately 20% of the UK’s tabletop strawberries. The latest iteration of this robot promises to add even greater value by providing essential data collection capabilities that can transform the way strawberries are grown and harvested.

Dual Functionality

While Thorvald administers UV-C light treatments twice a week at Chambers Farm, it simultaneously captures detailed video footage of the crops. Equipped with advanced onboard AI, the robot can astonishingly count over three million fruits and flowers in a single night. It assesses the ripeness of each fruit using a scale from 0 (flower) to 7 (overripe) and maps this vital information to specific field rows.

Data-Driven Insights

Once the data is collected, it’s uploaded to Bitwise Agronomy’s platform, where it’s combined with weather data and field sensor readings. Utilizing Bitwise’s proprietary ripening curves, this collaboration generates precise yield forecasts. By providing growers with accurate, actionable insights, the partnership enables better planning for labor, harvests, and sales.

Damian Flynn, Chief Product Officer of Saga Robotics, emphasized the importance of this initiative: “This is about putting real numbers in the hands of growers. Thorvald is already out there, delivering UV-C treatments. Now, it’s doubling its value by capturing detailed fruit data that gives growers clarity instead of guesswork.”

Chambers Farm: A Real-World Testing Ground

Chambers Farm serves as the testing ground for this innovative collaboration. Tim Chambers, the managing director, stated, “These are robots that work where it counts: in the field.” He highlighted the advantages of Thorvald’s nightly data runs, which offer insights into flower density and ripening rates, allowing for more focused picking resources. With Bitwise’s forecasting layered in, Chambers Farm can elevate its operational planning to unprecedented levels.

Saga Robotics sees Thorvald not just as a UV-C treatment platform but as an integrated, autonomous solution for Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and crop data collection.
