Rochester Institute of Technology to Launch Bachelor’s Degree in Artificial Intelligence

Rochester Institute of Technology Launches New Bachelor’s Program in Artificial Intelligence

New Beginnings: RIT Launches Bachelor’s Degree in Artificial Intelligence

This fall, the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in New York will take a significant step into the future by offering a bachelor’s degree in artificial intelligence (AI). This innovative program is designed to equip undergraduate students with the skills needed to transform data and algorithms into practical, real-world applications.

A Comprehensive Curriculum

The newly announced program will not only delve into the technical aspects of AI but also address the human-centered side of technology. Students will engage in a mix of courses that span machine learning, natural language processing, and analytics. What sets RIT’s program apart is its holistic approach—a blend of psychology, ethics, art, math, and computer science, aimed at connecting human needs with technological progress.

In parallel, a six-course AI minor will also be introduced, catering to students who wish to complement their major with AI foundations.

A Focus on Real-World Experience

One of the standout features of RIT’s AI degree is its emphasis on real-world experience. Students will be required to complete two semesters of full-time, paid work experience through a cooperative education program. RIT’s strong partnerships with tech giants like Google, Apple, IBM, and Microsoft will provide students with invaluable opportunities to apply their knowledge in professional settings.

RIT’s Dean of the College of Computing and Information Sciences, Matt Huenerfauth, highlights that the curriculum is not just academic but is closely aligned with industry needs. “Our AI degree is informed by industry demands and features the hands-on curriculum that is a hallmark of an RIT education,” he stated.

Addressing the Demand for AI Skills

The introduction of this new program comes at a time when the job market for AI expertise is rapidly expanding. Research indicates that the number of AI job postings skyrocketed from 20,600 in 2010 to 180,900 in 2018, and by 2025, this number is projected to exceed one million. This demand underscores the importance of RIT’s commitment to preparing its students for future careers in a rapidly evolving landscape.

A Legacy in Innovation

RIT’s new degree builds on its longstanding tradition of embracing technological advancements. Since 1986, the university has been teaching AI courses and recently launched a master’s degree in AI in 2023. RIT has a history of pioneering educational programs, being among the first to offer undergraduate degrees in information technology and software engineering.

Joining a National Trend

RIT is joining a growing number of institutions across the United States that are recognizing the importance of AI education. In the last two years, universities such as the University of Pennsylvania, Northwestern University, and the University at Buffalo have announced their own undergraduate AI programs, reflecting a nationwide trend towards integrating AI into higher education.

Conclusion

As RIT prepares to welcome its first cohort of AI students this fall, the institute stands at the forefront of a critical educational shift. With its innovative curriculum, emphasis on real-world experience, and a commitment to bridging the gap between technology and society, RIT is not just preparing students for jobs in AI; it is preparing them to shape the future. The world is watching, and with a groundwork laid in creativity, ethics, and practical experience, RIT graduates will be ready to lead the way.
