Milrem Robotics to Donate 150 THeMIS UGVs to Ukraine with Support from the Netherlands and VDL Defentec
Milrem Robotics Fuels Ukraine’s Defense with Significant UGV Donation
In a remarkable show of support for Ukraine during its ongoing conflict, Milrem Robotics has announced its commitment to deliver over 150 THeMIS unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs). This remarkable initiative is enabled through a donation funded and coordinated by the Netherlands, showcasing the collaborative spirit within Europe’s defense community.
A Strategic Partnership
The formal announcement took place on October 6, 2023, during a signing ceremony attended by Dutch Minister of Defence, Ruben Brekelmans, alongside representatives from Milrem Robotics and VDL. This partnership is particularly significant as VDL Defentec will play a key role in assembling and delivering a substantial portion of these advanced vehicles at their facility in Born.
The collaboration emphasizes the importance of scalable solutions in defense systems, with VDL establishing a dedicated final assembly line tailored for future production. This strategic setup not only supports the current donation but also lays the groundwork for ongoing innovation and increased capabilities within the defense sector in the Netherlands and beyond.
Training for Effective Utilization
Recognizing that technology alone does not ensure successful outcomes in the field, Milrem Robotics will provide comprehensive training for Ukrainian operators and support staff. This training will ensure that the THeMIS vehicles are utilized to their fullest potential, enhancing their operational effectiveness and ensuring smooth maintenance procedures in the field.
Proven Performance
The THeMIS platform has garnered recognition for its adaptability and performance in various combat scenarios. Having been operational in Ukraine since 2022, the new delivery will bolster the existing fleet of 15 units already in service, further enhancing the efficiency of dismounted forces, logistics, reconnaissance, and combat support missions.
Kuldar Väärsi, CEO of Milrem Robotics, expressed his pride in leading this valuable initiative, stating, “We are honoured to lead this project in partnership with the Netherlands and VDL. The THeMIS platform has already demonstrated its value under combat conditions, and we believe this contribution will materially strengthen Ukraine’s defense capability.”
A Testament to European Cooperation
This initiative exemplifies the strength and agility of Europe’s defense industry, marking a significant moment of cooperation among nations. Willem van der Leegte, CEO of VDL Groep, highlighted this collaboration, stating, “This initiative highlights the strength of cooperation between partners in Europe’s defence industry and their ability to scale up and contribute directly to international security.”
The THeMIS UGVs are not only pivotal for immediate operational needs but also set the stage for continued advancements in unmanned systems technology. With service in 19 countries, the THeMIS platform stands as the most widely deployed UGV in its class.
Looking Ahead
As Milrem Robotics and VDL Defentec move forward with this project, the focus remains on creating a resilient and capable defense framework for Ukraine. The partnership forms a solid foundation for future innovations and production capabilities that could extend far beyond this initial deployment.
Overall, this initiative serves as a beacon of hope and progress, showcasing the lengths to which allies will go to support one another in times of need. Milrem Robotics and the Netherlands are demonstrating that through unity and collaboration, meaningful contributions to international security and defense can be achieved.
